Engineering Manager, MAAS

We work with the world's leading public cloud and silicon providers and collaborate across more than 80 countries in a highly distributed, remote-first culture.The roleAs an Engineering Manager on the MAAS (Metal as a Service) team, you will lead a distributed group of engineers, drive technical excellence, and help shape Canonical's flagship data-center product. MAAS delivers a cloud-style on-demand API for bare-metal provisioning, network configuration, and storage. The role requires experience in high-quality software development, high-performance team leadership, and deep familiarity with Linux on physical servers, storage, and data-center networking.ResponsibilitiesLead a distributed engineering team across Americas or EMEA time zones.Develop talent through coaching, mentoring, feedback, and career planning.Set and manage expectations with other engineering teams, senior management, and external stakeholders.Advocate for and promote modern software development practices.Participate in engineering processes through code and architectural review.Engage with broader teams at Canonical, the open-source community, and partners.Travel to internal and external global events for 4-6 weeks per year.QualificationsBachelor's degree or equivalent in Computer Science or related field.Strong academic record.Proven experience delivering software with Python, Go, or similar languages.Experience with Linux system administration (Debian or Ubuntu preferred).Familiarity with modern Linux cloud-computing technologies, including networking, storage, containers, and Kubernetes.Technical aptitude for understanding complex distributed systems.Professional written and spoken English with excellent presentation skills.Experience with agile software development methodologies.Ability to mentor, develop, and support team members.Result-oriented with a personal drive to meet commitments.Willingness to travel internationally twice a year for company events up to two weeks long.Nice-to-have skillsExperience with TypeScript and modern web frameworks such as React, Angular, Svelte, or Vue.Knowledge of data-center infrastructure management and design.BenefitsRemote-first work environment with twice-yearly in-person team sprints.Personal learning and development budget ($2,000 USD per year).Annual compensation review and performance-driven bonus or commission.Recognition rewards.Annual holiday leave and parental leave.Employee Assistance Programme.Opportunity to travel to new locations to meet colleagues.Priority Pass and travel upgrades for long-haul company events.LocationThis is a work-from-anywhere position available in EMEA or the Americas.Equal Opportunity EmployerCanonical is an equal opportunity employer.
