Compliance Investigator I - MED

Job Summary The Compliance Investigator I is a member of the Marijuana Enforcement Division (MED). MED regulates, licenses, and enforces compliance among Colorado's medical and retail marijuana businesses. The investigator conducts investigations, inspections, and outreach to ensure licensees adhere to state statutes and regulations. Key Responsibilities Conduct complex investigations of licensees, including evidence collection, report preparation, and recommendations for administrative action. Engage licensees and stakeholders to promote compliance and conduct risk‑based monitoring. Perform inspections of medical and retail marijuana businesses to ensure adherence to statutes and regulations. Coordinate with local, state, and federal law enforcement agencies on marijuana‑related matters. Develop and implement Standard Operating Procedures and support outreach resources. Assist with compliance education, training, and public outreach initiatives. Licensing Investigations Investigate multi‑jurisdictional and multinational entities. Assess tax status, business structures, financial documentation, asset identification, licenses, liens and more. Review criminal history of applicants. Recommend license renewal approvals, denials, or other actions. Coordinate with other agencies and manage outreach for non‑payment or non‑compliance. Document evidence, complete surrenders, withdrawals, expirations, and finalize business applications. Regulatory Enforcement Visit medical and retail businesses for compliance inspections. Assist with initiating disciplinary actions, evidence collection, report preparation, and presentation to leadership and the Office of the Attorney General. Implement risk‑based approaches to interpretation of statutes and regulations. Handle license processing, withdrawals, expirations, and communications. Support Standard Operating Procedure development for enforcement activities. Compliance Education and Outreach Assist with internal and external training and presentations. Contribute to educational resources and outreach initiatives. Respond to inquiries on licensing requirements and regulatory changes. Residency Requirement Applicant must be a resident of the State of Colorado at the time of application. Minimum Qualifications Five (5) years of relevant investigative experience in a regulatory environment. Combination of education in fields such as business administration, criminal justice, public administration, or related disciplines, or equivalent experience. Preferred Qualifications Experience interpreting and applying statutes and regulations. Experience in a highly regulated industry focused on public health and safety. Additional investigative or compliance experience in a regulatory setting. Experience in the public sector or with government agencies. Recent experience with investigations involving public health or consumable product testing. Proficiency in Google Suite, Microsoft Word and Excel. Excellent oral and written communication and interpersonal skills.
