Position Summary
The Anatomic Pathologist provides diagnostic pathology services through the examination and interpretation of surgical pathology, cytopathology, and autopsy specimens. The incumbent collaborates with clinicians, surgeons, and other healthcare professionals to support patient care, quality improvement, and laboratory operations. Responsibilities may include participation in multidisciplinary conferences, teaching, research, and administrative activities depending on organizational needs.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Examine and interpret surgical pathology specimens and provide accurate and timely diagnostic reports.
Evaluate cytology specimens and provide diagnostic consultation as appropriate.
Perform and interpret gross and microscopic examinations of tissue specimens.
Utilize ancillary testing, including immunohistochemistry, molecular diagnostics, and special stains, to support diagnosis.
Consult with physicians and other healthcare providers regarding pathology findings and patient management.
Participate in multidisciplinary tumor boards, clinical conferences, and quality assurance activities.
Ensure compliance with applicable regulatory, accreditation, and laboratory standards.
Maintain accurate and complete medical records and pathology documentation.
Contribute to quality improvement initiatives and laboratory performance metrics.
Participate in on-call coverage and departmental service responsibilities as assigned.
Support education and training of medical students, residents, fellows, laboratory staff, and other healthcare professionals, as applicable.
Engage in scholarly, research, and academic activities as appropriate to the position.
Qualifications
Education
Doctor of Medicine (MD) or Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine (DO) degree from an accredited institution.
Training
Completion of an accredited residency program in Anatomic Pathology or Anatomic and Clinical Pathology.
Certifications and Licensure
Board certification or board eligibility in Anatomic Pathology or Anatomic and Clinical Pathology by the American Board of Pathology.
Eligibility for medical licensure in the applicable state.
Maintenance of professional certifications and continuing medical education requirements.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Comprehensive knowledge of surgical pathology and diagnostic pathology principles.
Proficiency in histopathologic interpretation and report generation.
Knowledge of laboratory quality assurance, safety, and regulatory requirements.
Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
Ability to work collaboratively in a multidisciplinary healthcare environment.
Commitment to patient safety, quality improvement, and professional development.
Effective organizational and time management skills.
Preferred Qualifications
Fellowship training in a pathology subspecialty.
Experience in an academic medical center, hospital, or large healthcare system.
Demonstrated interest in research, education, or quality improvement initiatives.
Experience participating in multidisciplinary clinical programs and tumor boards.
Physical Requirements
Ability to perform prolonged microscope work and computer-based tasks.
Ability to communicate effectively in person, by telephone, and electronically.
Ability to meet institutional requirements for clinical practice and credentialing.
Reporting Relationship
Reports to: Division Director, Department Chair, Medical Director, or other designated leader.
Work Environment
Work is performed in a pathology laboratory, hospital, academic medical center, or healthcare setting. The position requires adherence to laboratory safety standards and applicable regulatory requirements.
