Art Teacher 11 Month (Secondary)

Job Description Job Title: Secondary - Visual Art Teacher (School-based) Location: Northern Virginia Juvenile Detention Center (NCJDC), Alexandria, Virginia Position Type: Full-Time, Licensed, 11‑month, 216 days. Qualifications Education: Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited college or university in a related field required; Master’s preferred. Certificates & Licenses: Valid Virginia Department of Education teaching provisional, collegiate or postgraduate license with endorsement in Visual Arts PreK‑12, or eligibility to obtain upon hiring. Clearances: Criminal justice fingerprint/background clearance; tuberculosis skin test; public health compliance. Essential Functions / Responsibilities Administers subject‑specific assessment and tests to evaluate student competencies. Advises parents and legal guardians of student progress, expectations, achievements, and strategies for improvement. Assesses progress toward objectives, expectations, and goals and provides feedback to students, parents, and administration. Collaborates with instructional staff, school personnel, parents, and community resources to improve student outcomes and support the school improvement plan. Provides counseling to improve performance, health status, problem‑solving, and personal issues. Demonstrates required methods for classroom and subject‑specific assignments, directs assistant teachers, instructional assistants, volunteers, and student workers. Evaluates bus routes and schedules for compliance with safety policies and guidelines. Instructs students in arts (crafts, drawing, painting, design) and proper use of equipment, tools, and supplies. Manages student behavior to create a safe, optimal learning environment and monitors students in various settings. Participates in meetings to convey or gather information needed for duties. Plans art displays and exhibitions to showcase student work. Prepares written materials (grades, attendance, anecdotal records) for documentation and compliance. Reports incidents (fights, suspected abuse, substance abuse) to maintain safety and adhere to policies. Responds to emergency situations to resolve immediate safety concerns and direct to appropriate personnel. Responds to inquiries from teachers, parents, administrators, and other sources and provides direction, as needed. Supports classroom teachers in implementing curriculum and individual student plans. Performs additional duties as assigned by supervisor. Compensation Salary determined by The ACPS Teachers and Other Licensed Staff Salary Scale.
