Recreation Coordinator
The city of Las Vegas invites applications for two Recreation Coordinator positions within the Department of Parks, Recreation and Cultural Affairs:
- Recreation Coordinator – Becker Technology Center
- Recreation Coordinator – Wayne Bunker Pickleball Center
These positions oversee the development, coordination, and daily operations of specialized recreation programs and facilities while supervising assigned staff, ensuring exceptional customer service, and evaluating programs to meet community needs.
The city is recruiting to fill these current vacancies; however, this recruitment will establish an eligible list that may be used to fill future Recreation Coordinator vacancies throughout the department. Reporting assignments, work locations, and operational needs are subject to change at the discretion of the city. Employees may be assigned or reassigned based on organizational priorities, departmental needs, and operational requirements.
The ideal candidate for the Becker Technology Center will have experience developing and managing technology-based recreation programming, such as digital literacy, computer education, STEM, coding, robotics, eSports, gaming, multimedia, or other emerging technology initiatives. The successful candidate will demonstrate innovation, the ability to build community partnerships, experience managing technology resources and equipment, and a passion for expanding access to technology for participants of all ages.
The ideal candidate for the Wayne Bunker Pickleball Center will have experience administering pickleball or racquet sport facilities and programs, including leagues, tournaments, clinics, open play, court scheduling, and special events. The successful candidate will possess strong organizational and customer service skills, experience coordinating staff and volunteers, and the ability to build relationships with players, instructors, community organizations, and tournament directors while maintaining a premier recreation facility.
Supervision Received and Exercised Receives direction from the Recreation Supervisor or other supervisory and management staff. Acts as a formal first line supervisor, exercising direct supervision, including monitoring and formally evaluating employee performance, and participating in the selection and discipline of employees.
Examination Process A civil service examination will be conducted in accordance with the Civil Service Rules of the city of Las Vegas. The supplemental questions are the examination. Falsification of information may result in disqualification from a recruitment or removal from a city position. Additional information will not be accepted after the closing date. The supplemental questions of all qualified applicants will be reviewed for placement on an eligible list. Eligible List
You must score 70% or higher on the examination to be placed on the eligible list. The eligible list will remain in effect for a period of 6 months from the date of certification and may be extended for a period of up to 2 years. Selection Process
Final candidate selection will include list placement and may include hiring interview (if applicable). Any individual offered employment will be required to pass a pre-employment drug test, complete background check, and may be required to demonstrate the ability to perform the physical requirements of the job. Some positions may require preliminary background checks. The purpose of this recruitment is to establish an eligible list for current and/ or future openings which may include part-time or full-time positions.
Example of Duties
Essential Functions
- Plans, directs, coordinates and manages the daily operations of an assigned recreation facility, work unit or program.
- Acts as first line supervisor for designated staff within a department; participates in interviewing and selecting job applicants; provides training, overseeing work, and establishing and evaluating appropriate performance standards in accordance with department objectives.
- Ensures employees adhere to established work methods, techniques and schedules, and comply with applicable city and department policies, procedures, standards and specifications; reviews needs with appropriate management staff; allocates resources accordingly.
- Develops, coordinates, and oversees a variety of recreational programs, including, but not limited to, adult, youth, active adult, adaptive/therapeutic recreation, sports, eSports (leagues, tournaments, competitions, etc.), and activities, multi-generational programs, camps, out-of-school-time programs, trips and special events.
- Conducts assessments, surveys, and site audits and collects customer service cards to solicit community feedback about recreation programming and events; analyzes feedback and identifies community recreation needs; plans and implements recreation programming and events to meet community needs.
- Serves as department liaison with other city departments, divisions, public and outside agencies. Represents the division in various committees and work groups. Receives and responds to complex and sensitive issues. Handles inquiries and complaints from start through resolution in an efficient and timely manner.
- Recommends and assists in the implementation of recreation programs policies and procedures. Monitors and evaluates the efficiency and effectiveness of service delivery methods and procedures.
- Evaluates assigned programs, activities, trips and events for content, techniques, and special problems.
- Develops and maintains positive working relationships with other departments, school administration, community groups, partners, and other agencies.
- Participates in the preparation and administration of the function budget. Submits budget recommendations. Monitors all financial transactions, expenditures, and identifies and reports potential financial overruns and variances at an early stage.
- Administers the use of grant funding. Maintains record keeping requirements as stated in grants. Recommends fee waivers and fee adjustments for non-profit groups and agencies.
- Monitors and maintains appropriate levels of supplies, equipment, and inventory to ensure efficient and effective operations. Participates in the procurement process, including researching materials, equipment, and vendors, assisting with specifications, and requisitioning materials as needed.
- Assists with marketing materials and displays; performs public relations duties including giving media interviews and presentations and public events; designs and maintains recreation facility bulletin boards.
- Monitors facilities, sports fields, arenas, parks, trails, and/or recreational open spaces for function, safety and equipment issues; performs regular safety and health related inspections, cleaning, and maintenance services as needed; requests maintenance services as necessary.
- Monitors and enforces safe workplace rules and procedures; completes and submits incident reports, workers' compensation paperwork and other related documents; makes emergency decisions regarding the welfare, safety and security of the participants and assigned staff.
- Enforces facility or program rules and regulations.
- Maintains documentation on all programs and participants; prepares statistical and summary reports as needed.
- Ensures employees correctly enter and update data in the recreational software or other data-driven software systems; troubleshooting when issues arise.
Marginal Functions
- Attends and participates in professional group meetings.
- Stays abreast of trends and innovations in the field of recreation programming including, but not limited to, adult, youth, active adult, adaptive/therapeutic recreation, technology, sports and eSports (leagues, tournaments, competitions, etc.) and activities, multi-generational programs, camps, out-of-school-time programs, trips and special events.
- Maintains a variety of automated and manual logs, records and files.
- Performs related duties and responsibilities as required.
Minimum Requirements
Experience /Training
- Bachelor's degree in a related field* and three (3) years (full-time) of increasingly responsible experience including one year of lead or supervisory experience in recreation program development, community center administration or a related field*, OR
- Equivalent to graduation from high school and five (5) years (full-time) general experience working in recreation or a related field* including one year of lead or supervisory experience in recreation program development, community center administration or a related field*, OR
- Equivalent to graduation from high school and six (6) years (full-time) of customer service experience that involved regular public contact, clerical work, cashiering, or parks & recreation experience including one (1) year of lead or supervisory experience in recreation program development, community center administration or a related field*, community center administration or a related field*.
*In the above criteria, related field may include, but is not limited to, general education, sociology, gerontology, psychology, parks & recreation, leisure studies, sports management, kinesiology, business management, and public, business or recreation administration. License or Certificate Possession of an appropriate, valid driver's license on the date of application, and maintenance thereafter. Possession of First Aid/CPR/AED certificate is required. Special Requirements Fluency in Spanish is desirable.
