TRC serves a broad range of clients in government and industry, implementing complex projects from initial concept to delivery and operation. Our mission is to solve the challenges of making the Earth a better place to live, community by community and project by project.

About the work:

Our projects involve a considerable amount of overnight travel, generally in the west, including Guam and Hawaii. The field-testing portion of each project typically lasts from 1 to 5 days, and the test teams are generally home on the weekends, but some projects may require working or traveling on a weekend. The number of people needed in the field and the number of days in the field varies with each project and changes from week to week. Expect 75% of the weeks to involve field work with overnight stays.

During testing, the Environmental Scientist will be at the location recording data, operating equipment, or working in the trailer recovering samples, performing analysis, etc. When not in the field, duties may include equipment calibrations and repairs, prep and packing for future projects, data reduction and processing, report writing, lab work, and tasks of that nature.

The Environmental Scientist will become proficient in the various USEPA sampling methods and develop knowledge about many types of industrial processes. Expect your colleagues to share their knowledge and help you develop into an industry expert as you advance. We pride ourselves on helping each other succeed through on the job training and coaching. The experienced Environmental Scientist typically advances into either a client-oriented career path of project management and business development or into a technical oriented career path working with the latest monitoring and analytical equipment.

What it takes to start the journey:

  • Must be able to comfortably lift and carry 50 pounds. The testing projects can involve moving equipment to, and working at, elevated test locations, such as an exhaust stack platform or a rooftop. Access to the test location may be by elevator, stairs, or a ladder.
  • Must be able to work comfortably outdoors throughout all the seasons.
  • Strong written and oral communication skills, and moderate computer skills.
  • A solutions oriented, positive attitude.
  • Successful completion of a background check and drug test (including marijuana) prior to employment or within five working days from the date of hire. Once hired, participation in the TRC random drug testing program is mandatory.
  • Possession of a valid driver's license and successful completion of a pre-employment motor vehicle records check to confirm a good driving record. Once hired, maintaining valid DOT driver status (not Commercial Driver's License) is required.
  • Once hired, successful completion of all required annual safety training.
  • A college degree is required. A background in science or engineering is preferred but the willingness to learn is more important than your major.

For someone who likes to travel and see new places, doesn't mind working long hours outside, has an interest in all kinds of industrial processes, and doesn't want to be tied to a desk, this can be a very rewarding career where your work has direct impact on the air we breathe.
