Housekeeping Aid Supervisor

Summary Employee will be assigned to Environmental Management Service (EMS), VA Medical Center, Birmingham, AL, providing technical and administrative supervision over subordinate workers in supporting and performing tasks (e.g., environment of care, textile distribution, and training) associated with the EMS goals and objectives. Responsibilities Duties include but may not be limited to the following: Assigns staff for routine and non-routine duties on a daily and a project-by-project basis; reorganizes work schedules efficiently to ensure work is accomplished in a timely manner; and coordinates work with supervisors of other services within the positions area of jurisdiction so as not to interrupt patient care or other activities. Responsible for the cleaning of all patient areas, corridor spaces throughout the facility, operating rooms, and all other areas as assigned; ensures efficient and economical accomplishment of work assignments of subordinates within established policies and schedules set by higher levels of supervision; and plans daily and weekly assignments, scheduling periodic work for areas of responsibility, taking into consideration the availability of personnel and equipment to meet established priorities. Provides on-the job training for subordinates as individual needs dictate and to ensure the housekeeping duties are effectively accomplished. Keeps subordinates abreast of proper methods, procedures, and uses of equipment and supplies; and controls the use of supplies and equipment to affect cost control within the unit; and ensures all safety regulations and procedures are observed and may on occasion be required to conduct training classes on specific safety issues. Approves leave requests for subordinates, counsels' employees, and recommends disciplinary action to a higher-level supervisor whenever non-compliance with policy warrants; and conducts formal appraisal of subordinates works performance and conduct. Routinely inspects assigned areas to assure the timely accomplishment of employee assignments, sanitation levels are maintained, equipment properly cared for, and that associated housekeeping objectives are accomplished in an expedient and timely manner; records discrepancies in cleanliness, needed maintenance repairs, broken or inadequately stored furnishings and equipment, etc.; and completes documented inspection reports. Works independently following up on all work assignments to ensure that established procedures, work assignments and safety standards are being properly applied and adjusting as necessary; and ensures time and attendance records are accurate and complete prior to submission to timekeeper. Performs other related duties as assigned. Work Schedule: Tuesday - Saturday, 3:00pm - 11:30pm. Qualifications PHYSICAL EFFORT AND WORK CONDITIONS: Position demands continuous walking, standing, stooping, kneeling, pulling, and pushing. The work requires the occasional use of heavy powered cleaning equipment (e.g., wall washers, industrial type buffers) weighing over 50 pounds. The duties necessitate considerable dexterity, hand, foot, and eye coordination, and concentration as well as visual acuity to see dirt, dust and debris. Employee usually works indoors in a medical center environment in areas which normally have adequate heat, light, and ventilation. Worker is frequently exposed to caustic cleaning solutions, vibration from power equipment, and occasionally to serious injuries resulting from falls from ladders and scaffolds. Work involves exposure to hazardous materials including infectious waste materials. Special safety precautions and protective gear are required when handling these materials.
