TITLE: Day-to-Day Substitute Teacher Assistant II

PROGRAM: MAOF Head Start/State Pre-School (Los Angeles County)

SALARY: $19.15 – $20.20 per hour

STATUS: Non - Exempt, Part-Time (Flexible Hours)

CLOSING DATE: Open until filled

GENERAL SUMMARY

A staff person who assists in the teaching of a Head Start center, instructs children in activities designed to promote their social, physical, and intellectual growth. Assists in the planning of individual and group activities which stimulates learning, according to the ages of the children. Responsible for the supervision of children at all times indoors/outdoors. The position is situated in the educational service area of Head Start/Early Head Start. This is an on-site position and requires regular presence at the childcare centers or designated facility.

1. COMPONENT MISSION

1. The objective of the Educational Services Component is to:

1. Provide children with a learning environment and various experiences which will help them develop socially, intellectually, physically, and emotionally in a manner appropriate to their age and stage of development.
2. Integrate the educational aspects of the various HS/EHS Service Areas in the daily schedule of activities.

1. RESPONSIBILITIES AND SPECIFIC DUTIES (but not limited to)

1. Environmental:

1. Assists teachers in the implementation of safety rules and supervises the children’s activities to ensure their safety.
2. Conducts daily inspection of indoor and outdoor facilities. Removes hazardous debris, unsafe equipment, and materials.
3. Daily health check of the children and reports results to the teacher.
4. Assist children during snacks and mealtimes. Demonstrates appropriate dental and personal hygiene to the children.
5. Assists teachers in straightening up and maintaining an orderly learning environment.
6. Assists in the preparation of children’s meals and kitchen duties, as needed.

1. Developmental and Educational:

1. Discusses assigned teaching areas with teacher to coordinate instructional efforts.
2. Prepares and/or assists with preparation of weekly lesson plans.
3. Plans, prepares, and develops various teaching aids.
4. Help develop the social learning and physical skills of the children.
5. Demonstrates the proper use of educational materials and equipment.
6. Teaches arts, crafts, songs and games to the children.
7. Acts out stories with children.
8. May lead group activities that reinforce children’s concepts related to space, time, numbers, colors, etc.
9. Assists in conducting individual and small and large group activities.
10. Works individually with children needing special attention.
11. Supervises children during transition from one activity to another.
12. Provides evaluative information to teachers on the progress and development status of each child, as needed.
13. Assists in the implementation of the Individualized Educational Plan for each child.
14. Supervises the classroom for brief periods when the teacher is on-site but away from the classroom.
15. Assists in implementing the programs curriculum, philosophy, policies and regulations.
16. Support children with toiletry needs, including diapering.

1. Assists teacher in designing and planning daily classroom program and schedule.

1. Administrative:

1. Takes attendance and records absences.
2. Participates in meetings of teaching team.
3. Attends orientations, in-service training, educational programs, conferences and workshops, as required.

1. RELATIONSHIPS

1. Supervision:

1. This position may receive indirect and/or intermittent direct supervision from the Area Supervisor. However, direct, daily supervision is provided by the center Teachers/Head Teacher/Site Supervisor. Moderate decision making is permitted to carry out duties and responsibilities. Performance education is conducted by the Head Teacher in conjunction with the Area Supervisor.

1. KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS REQUIRED

1. Minimum of six (6) units in Early Childhood Development or Teacher Assistant permit.
2. Must be able to read, write and communicate.
3. Bilingual (English/Spanish), preferred.
4. This is a day-to-day substitute position. Applicants should provide work availability schedule. The assignments will be based on program needs and applicants’ availability.
5. Must always possess fingerprint clearance during employment.

1. HEALTH REQUIREMENTS:

1. Must have verification of T.B. clearance at the time of employment issued within six (6) months prior to employment, to be renewed every four years.
2. Must pass pre-employment Health Screening, T.B. Test and Drug Screening.
3. Must submit to a flu vaccine once a year or submit a waiver.
4. Must provide vaccination record for influenza, pertussis and measles, at the time of employment.

Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, peripheral vision, and ability to adjust focus.

The work environmental characteristics are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job.

• This position operates in a professional childcare environment. The role routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, telephones, photocopiers etc. The noise level in the work environment is generally moderate.
