Position Summary

Under the supervision of the Back Office Manager, the Ophthalmic Technician provides clinical and administrative support to Optometrists and Ophthalmologists, to collaboratively ensure the delivery of high quality, compassionate eye care to Empire Eye and Laser Center’s patients. Please note, this position is part time, but has the opportunity to turn into a full time role.

Responsibilities

• Obtain and document past medical and surgical histories, chief complaint, history of present illness (HPI) and vital signs.
• Reconcile and document patient medications and allergies in the EHR system.
• Perform preliminary ophthalmic work-up, including but not limited to: Visual Acuity, Confrontational Visual Field Testing, Pupil Assessment, Tonometry, Ocular Motility Testing, Glare Testing, Refractometry, Pachymetry, Lensometry
• Perform specialty testing including but not limited to OCT, Visual Fields, Topography, Biometry, Wavefront Aberrometry and Fundus Photos
• Explain treatment procedures and provide approved educational information to patients and their families
• Respond to patient calls and prescription refill requests via phone or e-fax
• Maintain applicable work queues in the EHR system (Tasks).
• Perform clinical room turnover/set-up and equipment sterilization
• Maintain OSHA standards to ensure a safe environment
• Maintain stock of office, clinical and clinic specific supplies in all exam/treatment areas
• Assist with the training/onboarding of new staff as needed
• Ability to meet the physical and mental demands of the position
• The ability to work on-site
• Predictable, reliable, and prompt attendance.

Starting Wage Range

• $18-22 starting, depending on experience

Requirements:

Qualifications

• High school diploma or equivalent, required.
• 1-2 years of previous experience in medical office setting, required.
• IJCAHPO or AAO independent study course, preferred
• Certified Ophthalmic Assistant (COA), desired
• Bilingual in English and Spanish, desired

Physical Demands:

• Frequently required to stand; walk; about 80% of the time or more
• sit in front of a computer; type; perform repetitive mouse clicks; use hands to finger, handle or feel; and reach with hands and arms to assist patients and/or providers/staff
• Occasionally assists with moving or positioning wheel-chair bound patients, clinical equipment; and office supplies up to 20 pounds

Clinical Competencies

• The broad knowledge base of Ophthalmic practice, examination and diagnostic procedures.
• Ophthalmic Knowledge: Strong understanding of eye terminology and anatomy and best practices in the effective flow of clinical services.
• Knowledge of medical equipment and instruments used within the department.
• All other duties as assigned Patient Focus – Making patients and their needs a primary focus of one’s actions; developing and sustaining productive patient relationships.

Communication – Clearly conveying information and ideas through a variety of media (email, Slack, etc) to individuals or groups in a manner that is polite, direct and professional. Positive, intentional discussions are encouraged.

Training Period

Week 1: Prioritizes virtual coursework, examinations, and compliance training.

Week 2: Complete hands-on training in patient intake, pretesting, equipment use, documentation, and clinic workflow with manager and peer supervision. Demonstrate competency through required skill check-offs before performing designated tasks independently.

Week 3: Begin supervised patient workups, with the expectation of independently managing routine workups by approximately Week 3, based on demonstrated competency. Participate in ongoing manager check-ins, chart reviews, coaching, and advanced skill training throughout the 90-day introductory period.

A Typical Day in the Position

• Arrive on time and park in one of the many designated employee parking spaces.
• Shifts are scheduled 10 minutes prior to your team’s first patient scheduled.
• Enjoy complimentary coffee and our staff-curated Spotify playlist pumping jams through the building, all day long!
• Complete opening duties, log into the EHR on your assigned iPad, and begin pre-testing patients as they check in, by scheduled order.
• Prep
• Maintain efficient patient flow while assisting providers, stocking rooms, preparing for upcoming visits/testing, and completing prescription, task queue, and voicemail follow-up during downtime.
• Ensure to keep your Slack notifications on in case providers or teammates message with updates or questions.
• Check-in with your provider before going to lunch to ensure they don’t need additional support
• Take your 1 hour lunch before your 5th hour worked and be clocked in and ready for PM clinic by 12:45 PM. Complimentary staff lunches and treats from our vendor partners, are typically provided 1–2 times per month.
• Repeat the patient care workflow throughout the afternoon while maintaining room and equipment readiness.
• Complete assigned closing duties, shut down equipment, and ensure outstanding patient calls/tasks are addressed.
• Check-in with your manager before leaving for the day and enjoy a scenic drive home along the Kern River.
