The role of a respiratory therapist encompasses the evaluation, therapeutic intervention, and education for patients experiencing cardiopulmonary disorders, sleep disorders, or related complications. These professionals assess patients to prevent, identify, monitor, and manage diseases and their complications. They deliver therapeutic interventions aimed at improving cardiopulmonary health and overall well-being, in alignment with established goals and interdisciplinary care plans.

Additionally, respiratory therapists provide education to encourage preventive care, self-management, and enhanced cardiopulmonary health, thereby improving quality of life. They may also offer guidance and data management concerning sleep-disordered breathing. Regular assessments of patients and their equipment are conducted to adjust therapies as needed. They collect and analyze blood and other specimens to evaluate levels of oxygen, carbon dioxide, and other gases, and measure lung capacity to identify any impairments. Based on their analyses, they provide diagnostic results and treatment recommendations.

• A degree in Respiratory Care from an accredited program is mandatory; at least an associate degree or its equivalent as recognized by the National Board for Respiratory Care (NBRC).
• Respiratory therapists must possess comprehensive knowledge of all procedures, indications, contraindications, and risks associated with respiratory care, as well as familiarity with the equipment used in their field.
• Demonstrated ability to utilize computers for patient documentation and data collection to ensure quality care is essential.
• Completion of orientations, competency validations, and any additional training required by the department and facility is necessary.
• Current licensure in respiratory therapy in the state(s) of practice is required, along with multi-state licensure privileges as applicable.
• Registered Respiratory Therapist (RRT) credentials from the NBRC are required, with maintenance of active status in accordance with NBRC credentialing standards.
• Certification in Basic Life Support (BLS) is essential. Additional site-specific specialty certifications such as Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP), Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS), and Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) must also be obtained.
