Position Overview:

The Business Intelligence Developer creates analytics content for end users and third parties who require Epic data. The Business Intelligence Developer is critical in transforming healthcare data into actionable insights through the development of dashboards, reports, and analytics solutions using Epic's reporting tools. The ideal candidate will have hands-on experience with Caboodle, and related tools, along with a strong understanding of healthcare operations and clinical workflows.

Specific Skills Needed:

• Critical thinking and an analytical mind
• User-focused design and data visualization skills
• Proficiency with SQL and relational database concepts
• Proficiency and demonstrated experience with analytics tools
• Familiarity with Epic applications and database structure, through training that occurs early in the implementation
• Ability to gain an in-depth understanding of the data model through data model classes geared toward content areas
• Ability to understand data structures that could benefit the entire data environment

Education/Experience/Training:

Required:

• 3 years of experience and under
• Client’s internal applicants or Altera employees (working at Client as of May 2025), Epic certification in the required application/module must be obtained within 120 days of hire or transfer into the position. Failure to obtain certification within this timeframe may result in removal from the position; however, the employee will be eligible to apply for other internal openings for which they meet the minimum qualifications.

Preferred:

• Bachelor’s degree in computer sciences, math, information systems, or statistics
• External applicants: Possess active Epic certification in at least one of the below certifications:
• Epic Train Track: Access Data Model
• Epic Train Track: Clinical Data Model
• Epic Train Track: Revenue Data Model
• Epic Train Track: Caboodle Development for Non-Epic Data
• Epic Train Track: Caboodle Development for Clarity Data
• Epic Cogito Data Model, Clarity Data Model and Caboodle Data Model
• Experience working in a regulated environment (FDA, HIPPA)
• Analytics, SQL experience and developing in data visualization tools (e.g. Tableau, Power BI, etc.)
• Experience in a hospital and/or clinic setting

Duties and Responsibilities:

• Safeguards and preserves the confidentiality of patient’s protected health information in accordance with State and Federal (HIPAA) regulatory requirements, hospital, and departmental policies.
• Ensures a safe patient environment and adherence to safety practices per policy.
• With consideration to age, employee utilizes the approved process to resolve biophysical, psychological, educational, and environmental needs of patient/significant other when administering care.
• Analyzing non-Caboodle datasets to identify required data elements to be moved into Caboodle.
• Mapping non-Epic datasets to existing database structures within Caboodle.
• Designing and developing custom database structures within Caboodle as needed.
• Developing custom imports to move additional pieces of Epic data from Clarity to Caboodle.
• Developing custom import packages to move non-Epic data into Caboodle.
• Designing data models to meet organization-specific goals and use cases.
• Leading decisions around coding practices and version control.
• Configuring and testing Epic-released and Foundation System content for all applications, including:
• Reporting Workbench
• SlicerDicer
• Radar
• Cogito SQL
• Creating content to display Epic data from Chronicles, Clarity, and Caboodle.
• Writing SQL and configuring Radar settings for custom SQL metrics.
• Modifying existing reports, as necessary.
• Distributing analytics content to data consumers.
• Reviewing peer reports for validity.
• Working with subject matter experts to understand the needs of data consumers.
• Maintaining the Analytics Catalog and associated metadata records.
• Testing analytics build in a specified testing environment and volume testing in live environments.
• Reviewing upgrade documentation related to Cogito features and determining how to implement the changes.
• Also responsible for building and maintaining:
• Cubes
• Extracts
• SlicerDicer custom filters
• Third-party BI tools
• Epic data in Caboodle
• Provide timely on-site and remote support to end users, including after-hours support.
• Perform other duties as assigned.
