Job Title Winder Company Cox & Company, Inc. Location Plainview, NY Job Overview We are seeking an outgoing individual to join our team as a Coil Winder. As a Coil Winder, you will be responsible for winding coils used in electrical equipment and instruments, or as electronic components, according to wiring diagrams, sample coil, or work order by performing the following duties: Responsibilities Wind wire onto magnetic cores to the specified number of turns, according to wiring diagrams, sample coil, or work order. Cut wire to specified lengths using wire cutters. Tin wire ends using a soldering iron. Insert and adjust air core, iron core, or laminate core into coil. Inspect and test completed coils for continuity, resistance, and shorts using an ohmmeter and other testing devices. Record production and operational data on specified forms. Maintain a clean and safe work area. Review wiring diagrams, work orders, or sample coil to ascertain wire specifications, coil length, circumference, and primary and secondary windings. Select and secure the appropriate coil-forming device onto the machine arbor, mandrel, or spindle. Thread end of wire from reel through tension device, guides, and spreader; bend wire ends to form lead and attach lead to coil core. Turn set screws to adjust tension on wire and set counter for the number of turns specified. Start the machine and manually feed wire over coil core or spreader to obtain an even and uniform winding and shape of coil. Observe counter and stop machine at the specified number of coils. Wrap insulation between layers and around wound coil or insert plastic blocks between turns to form cooling ducts. Cut wire to form leads. Pound coil with hammer or mallet to shape end windings or remove coil from fixtures. Wind materials such as cotton, glass mica, paper, or tape around the coil, and apply varnish or dip coil in varnish, epoxy, or wax to reinforce and seal the coil. Strip insulation from the end of lead wires, thread lead wires through insulating sleeves or slide sleeves over leads, and solder lead wires to terminals. Qualifications High school diploma or equivalent. Previous experience in coil winding or a related field preferred. Ability to read and interpret wiring diagrams and work orders. Familiarity with hand tools and soldering equipment. Strong attention to detail and ability to perform repetitive tasks. Ability to work independently and as part of a team. Good communication and interpersonal skills. Must be able to stand for extended periods of time and lift up to 50 pounds.
