Responsibilities Under general supervision perform routine clerical, administrative and technical work in receiving and dispatching routine and emergency information; receive and respond to communications by radio to police, fire, public works, and administration. Process prisoners incarcerated at the facility and maintain records. Reports to a Police Sergeant. Monitor telephones and radio in the dispatch center, answer all incoming calls, ascertain nature of call and gather all necessary information to transmit or relay. Dispatch police and other response vehicles for emergency responses and broadcast nature, location and time of incident. Contact all required personnel and other local concerns such as the fire department in the event of an emergency. Maintain computer‑aided dispatch log, location of personnel and equipment, and keep responding personnel informed of incoming pertinent information. Keep track of information such as traffic lights out, streets closed, and keep emergency personnel informed. Maintain dispatch center work area, equipment, and records in a clean and working condition. Receive complaints from the public concerning crimes and police emergencies, broadcast orders to police radio patrol units for investigation, and relay instructions or questions from remote units. Access NCIC computer for inquiries into criminal history, vehicle registration, license checks, and other relevant information. Monitor persons detained in jail facilities, maintain records on persons incarcerated in the city jail, and perform searches of incoming prisoners. Monitor individuals in holding cells for conduct, safety, medical or other needs, maintain security in all holding areas, and maintain a list of emergency telephone numbers. Log information on automobiles towed by city police and vehicles towed off private property. File noise violation and trespass notices, maintain reference information for emergency situations, operate radios, and assist with radio communications. Perform routine public safety work in the care and custody of prisoners, maintain order and discipline, and maintain dispatch documents and records. Additional Job Functions Delivers meals to prisoners. Required to fill in other positions within the department. Assists in training new employees. May transmit and receive messages between divisions of own agency and other law enforcement agencies. Serves as a member of various employee committees. Performs other related duties as assigned. Qualifications High school diploma or GED equivalent with two years of related customer service or dispatching experience, or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience. Must obtain NCIC certification within six months. Must obtain E‑911 and SC Basic Jail certification within one year. Must successfully complete periodic internal and external training programs. Must pass all background requirements as specified by the South Carolina Criminal Justice Academy. Benefits Paid annual and sick leave. 12 paid holidays per year.
