Athletic Trainer-Short Term Sub
This class is accountable for providing professional athletic trainer services for all athletic programs and student athletes requiring services at the high school and middle schools as required. The duties of the athletic trainer include, but are not limited to, prevention of athletic injuries; recognition, evaluation and immediate care of athletic injuries; rehabilitation and reconditioning of athletic injuries; professional development and responsibility; and health care administration as specified in the Domains of the NATA Certified Athletic Trainer. The athletic trainer serves as a liaison between physicians, coaches, athletes and parents. The athletic trainer ensures that players participate only when physically able and that any physician instructions are understood and followed. The athletic trainer will coordinate with the assistant principal/athletic director to ensure that the athletic training room and all required events will be covered.
Minimum Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
A. Education and Experience:
- Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university;
- Five (5) years' experience in athletic training;
- Hold and maintain National Athletic Trainers Association (NATA) Certification and Illinois State Licensure.
B. Credentials:
- Candidates may be required to possess a current Illinois Motor Vehicle Class D Operator license.
- Candidate may be required to have CPR and First Aid certification
C. Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
- Knowledge of academic curriculum, instructional practices, educational theory, and effective pedagogical techniques for diverse student populations.
- Knowledge of Illinois Learning Standards, educational assessment practices, and methods for using data to improve instruction and student achievement.
- Knowledge of evidence-based academic and behavioral interventions, including Multi-Tiered Systems of Support (MTSS), Response to Intervention (RtI), and Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS).
- Knowledge of school improvement processes, professional learning communities, and research-based practices that support continuous improvement and student success.
- Knowledge of the instructional, social-emotional, behavioral, and developmental needs of students, including students with disabilities and other diverse learning needs.
- Knowledge of educational administration, organizational management, supervision, and secondary school program operations, including applicable athletic and extracurricular programs.
- Knowledge of applicable federal and state laws, regulations, ethical standards, Board policies, and procedures governing public education and the education and welfare of minors.
- Knowledge of effective student supervision, discipline, school safety, crisis response, emergency procedures, and de-escalation practices.
- Knowledge of instructional and administrative technology and the ability to effectively utilize relevant software, systems, and digital tools.
- Skill in effective verbal and written communication, including preparing and presenting clear, concise, and accurate reports and information.
- Skill in problem-solving, decision-making, conflict resolution, and managing multiple complex priorities effectively.
- Ability to provide collaborative leadership within a shared decision-making environment and effectively direct, supervise, support, and develop staff.
- Ability to establish and sustain a positive, inclusive, safe, and academically focused school culture and climate that promotes student achievement, engagement, attendance, and appropriate behavior.

- Ability to respond effectively to emergencies, adhere to established safety practices, and administer first aid and CPR as required.
Essential Functions
- Administers first aid and provides immediate evaluation and care for athletic injuries, including appropriate emergency medical referral when necessary.
- Evaluates athletic injuries and develops, implements, and supervises rehabilitation programs consistent with physician direction and applicable professional standards.
- Prepares student athletes for practices and competition through appropriate taping, wrapping, bandaging, bracing, and other protective techniques designed to prevent or minimize injury.
- Develops and recommends flexibility, conditioning, strengthening, rehabilitation, and injury-prevention programs in collaboration with coaches and medical professionals.
- Provides athletic training coverage for practices, home contests, selected away contests, postseason competitions, and other events as determined in collaboration with the Athletic Director based on sport risk and program needs.
- Responds to medical emergencies and other immediate health and safety concerns involving student athletes during practices, competitions, and school-sponsored athletic activities.
- Consults and coordinates with physicians and other healthcare professionals regarding injury evaluation, referrals, treatment, rehabilitation, physical examinations, and return-to-participation considerations.
- Maintains open and effective communication with student athletes, parents/guardians, coaches, administrators, physicians, and other healthcare providers regarding injuries, treatment, rehabilitation, and participation status.
- Maintains accurate and confidential student health and athletic training records, including injuries, treatments, rehabilitation, medical histories, physical examinations, referrals, and required reports.
- Educates and advises student athletes, parents/guardians, and coaches regarding injury prevention, health and safety risks, nutrition, substance abuse, rehabilitation, and other health-related matters associated with athletic participation.
- Conducts sports medicine training and workshops for coaches and appropriate staff regarding injury prevention and recognition, first aid/CPR, emergency response, rehabilitation, bloodborne pathogens, District protocols, and related health and safety topics.
- Inspects athletic facilities, playing surfaces, equipment, and practice environments to identify potential hazards and recommends corrective measures to reduce the risk of injury.
- Assists coaches and officials during athletic events by responding to medical, safety, and athletic equipment needs.
- Coordinates required medical personnel, emergency medical services, and equipment for designated athletic events in accordance with IHSA, District, and other applicable requirements.
- Develops and manages the athletic training budget and coordinates the purchasing, maintenance, and inventory of athletic training supplies and equipment.
- Ensures athletic training services and practices comply with the Illinois Athletic Trainer Practice Act, IHSA requirements, District policies and procedures, and other applicable laws and professional standards.
- Collaborates with the Athletic Director, coaches, and other appropriate personnel to evaluate athletic training services, safety practices, and program effectiveness and recommends improvements as appropriate.
- Participates in team, department, and other meetings as appropriate to support student athlete health, safety, and athletic program operations.
- Establishes positive relationships with students and promotes responsible behavior, student well-being, and successful participation in school and athletic programs.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.
