Under the general guidance of the Neurosurgeon and the APP Manager, the Nurse Practitioner/Physician Assistant will evaluate, diagnose, and manage patients with complex neurological and neurosurgical conditions following department-approved practice guidelines.

The Advanced Practice Provider will join a busy, high acuity Neurosurgery service providing full coverage 24 hours a day, 7 days per week. The employee will staff 13-hour shifts 6a-7pm or 6pm-7am. Weekends required. Future scheduling needs, including potential increased weekend frequency or call, may be adjusted based on patient care needs, program growth, and operational priorities.

The ideal candidate has 13 years of neurosurgery experience and is eager to practice at the top of their license within a fast paced, team-oriented environment. Background in neurology, medicine, or ICU would also be strongly considered.

Essential duties include:

  • Assessing the physical and psychosocial status of clients by means of interview, health history, physical examination, and diagnostic studies.
  • Recognizing deviations from normal in the physical assessment. Working in collaboration with a physician in formulating treatment plans for health problems and follow-up.
  • Writing prescriptions for medication, blood products based upon laboratory results, routine diagnostic and follow-up studies, therapeutic measures, and post-discharge care in accordance with written practice protocols.
  • Determining eligibility of patients for entry into clinical trials based on findings.
  • Requesting written consultation from physicians and other healthcare professionals to ensure appropriate and quality patient care.
  • Interpreting and evaluating findings of studies/tests.
  • Relaying appropriate information regarding patient care to the collaborating physician.
  • Administering therapeutic measures and obtaining specimens as prescribed.
  • Evaluating the quality of care provided and recommending changes for improvement.
  • Initiating appropriate actions to facilitate the implementation of therapeutic plans that are consistent with the continuing healthcare needs of the client.
  • Dictating follow-up letters to referring physicians with summaries of treatment, response, and plan.
  • Maintaining provision of preventive health services (e.g. screening, risks assessment, immunizations, PAP smears, self-breast exam).
  • Dictating or writing patient history, admissions, care plans, progress, and discharge notes.
  • Interacting with program assistants and data managers for optimal patient care.
  • Assisting in the management of family dynamics and coping mechanisms during acute and chronic phases of patient care.
  • Conducting or participating in daily multidisciplinary rounds and ensuring appropriate and quality care for assigned patient.
  • Providing on-call coverage.
  • Performing patient triage and determining the urgency of physician's evaluation.
  • Providing symptom management for side effects related to oncologic treatment.

Standard qualifications include:

  • Master's Degree in Nursing OR a Masters in Physician Assistant studies
  • 1 to 2 years' experience as an Advanced Practice Provider in a Neurology clinical setting is preferred.
  • State of Michigan Nurse Practitioner/Physician Assistant license required
  • AHA/ARC BLS certification required
