Ophthalmic TechnicianThe ophthalmic technician supports a high-volume retina clinic by preparing patients for their visits, updating and maintaining accurate information in the electronic medical record (EMR), documenting physician encounters, and performing patient workups. This role serves as a key liaison between physicians and patients, ensuring that care plans are clearly communicated and that each visit runs smoothly in a fast-paced clinical environment.ResponsibilitiesPrepare patients for their visit by welcoming them, explaining the process, and ensuring they are ready for examination.Collect and update patient information in the EMR system, including vital signs, medical history, and family history.Accurately document physician visits in the EMR system, acting as a medical scribe during patient encounters.Perform detailed workups on patients after doctor visits, following established clinical protocols.Communicate care plans and follow-up instructions to patients based on the documented plan provided by the physician.Maintain accurate and timely medical documentation and data entry to support clinical workflows and patient safety.Collaborate with a team of clinic staff to manage a high volume of patients efficiently throughout the day.Support multiple clinic locations as needed, while maintaining a high standard of patient care and professionalism.Adapt to an extremely fast-paced environment, seeing 80–100 patients per day and prioritizing tasks effectively.Participate in training sessions and ongoing education to remain current with clinic procedures and best practices.Essential SkillsExperience in the medical field, with at least 1 year of on-site scribing or associated medical experience.Bachelor's degree in Biology or a related health science field, or a minimum of 1+ year of experience in the medical field.Proficiency with electronic medical record (EMR) systems and accurate medical documentation.Solid understanding of medical terminology and basic medical assisting practices.Strong patient care skills, with the ability to interact professionally and compassionately with a high volume of patients.Fast and accurate data entry and typing skills to document visits in real time.Ability to multi-task effectively in an extremely fast-paced clinical environment.Driven, self-motivated work style suited to a "Type A" personality.Comfort working in ophthalmology and retina-focused health care settings.Additional Skills & QualificationsInterest in clinical research and potential career progression into a clinical research department.Ability to thrive in high-volume patient care settings, seeing 80–100 patients per day.Strong organizational skills to manage schedules, documentation, and patient flow efficiently.Excellent communication skills to clearly convey physician instructions and care plans to patients.Commitment to ongoing learning, supported by annual continued education opportunities.Team-oriented mindset, able to collaborate with 8–24 clinic staff members per physician.Professional demeanor and reliability, including adherence to clinic protocols and appearance standards.Work EnvironmentThis role is based in a busy retina clinic environment that is considered a premier facility and operates at a very fast pace, seeing 80–100 patients per day. The schedule is Monday through Friday, with shifts falling between 6:30 a.m. and 6:00 p.m., depending on clinic needs; starting at the earliest time or working until the latest time is rare and typically occurs only when the clinic is extremely busy. Initial training takes place at an administrative building, after which the technician works as part of a team of 8–24 staff members supporting each physician. Employees are assigned to three primary clinics, with a home clinic in a high-volume location and occasional support at other clinics as needed. Schedules are provided two weeks in advance, and mileage is reimbursed when traveling to clinics outside the primary three locations for rare training or support needs. The environment is highly collaborative, focused on high-quality retina care and cutting-edge clinical research, with opportunities for career growth and continued education. The dress code requires navy blue scrubs, short and well-groomed nails, and hair that is fully tied back to maintain a professional and safe clinical appearance.Job Type & LocationThis is a Contract to Hire position based out of Bellaire, TX.Pay and BenefitsThe pay range for this position is $18.00 - $18.00/hr.Eligibility requirements apply to some benefits and may depend on your job classification and length of employment.
