About the Position

Job Title: Registered Nurse - Emergency Department Profession: Nursing Specialty: Nursing Administration Duration: 8 Weeks Shift: 12-Hour Evening Shift Hours per Shift: 36 Experience: Minimum of 2 years of recent Emergency Department experience required License: Valid nursing license required Certifications: BLS, ACLS, PALS, NIHSS, TNCC required; CPI/MOAB, TCRN, TNS, ENPC preferred Must-Have: - IV starts - Assisting with chest tube insertion - Medication titration (pressors, insulin, sedation) - Trauma experience - Stroke experience with TPA administration - Ultrasound guided IV preferred - EPIC experience Description: This facility is a Level 1 Trauma Center. It has a Level II NICU and has Magnet Designation. The average patient load is 150 patients per 24 hours. All Emergency Department patient types are treated, from neonates to geriatric patients. There are no inpatient pediatric units; pediatric cases are transferred as necessary. Common cases include stroke (TPA administration), diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA), trauma (gunshot wounds, motor vehicle collisions, elderly falls), geriatric psychiatric cases, abdominal pain, and COVID-19. There is a significant behavioral health population. The department has capabilities for ICU holds, and an Electronic ICU Registered Nurse is available as needed. Patient ratios are typically 1:4-6, with 1:4-5 during the day and flexing to 6 at night. When fully staffed, the ratio is 1:3. General support in the unit includes 5-7 ED technicians during the day and 3 technicians overnight. A charge nurse may have a patient assignment overnight (rare). RNs will draw most labs, although phlebotomy can be called for subsequent draws and will always come for traumas. Task RNs assist with break relief and can triage and draw labs. Alert RNs assist with critical patients in the Emergency Department. Respiratory therapists are available 24/7. Emergency Department physicians, mid-level providers, and hospitalists are also present 24/7. Centralized telemetry monitors are utilized throughout the unit and at the bedside. The electronic medical record system used is EPIC. Orientation includes initial meetings with educators and tours of the facility followed by shifts with preceptors. Scheduling includes a weekend rotation every other weekend. Holidays require the approval of time off through the manager. Shift times may include days from 7 AM to 7 PM, mids from 3 PM to 3 AM, and nights from 7 PM to 7 AM. A six-week scheduling cycle is created with self-scheduling options available. Scrub color for RNs is navy blue. CNA scrubs are teal.
