Registered Nurse - GI - EDRP

Summary Position is eligible for the Education Debt Reduction Program (EDRP) – a student loan payment reimbursement program. Candidates must meet specific eligibility requirements per VHA policy and submit their EDRP application within four months of appointment. Program approval determines the award amount (up to $200,000) and eligibility period (one to five years) and is decided by the VHA Education Loan Repayment Services program office after review of the EDRP application. Former EDRP participants are ineligible to apply. Qualifications English Language Proficiency – per 38 U.S.C. 7403(f) no person shall serve in direct patient care positions unless proficient in basic written and spoken English. Graduate of a professional nursing school approved by an accrediting agency (ACEN or CCNE) at the time of completion of the program. Or individuals attending a master’s level bridge program who have completed coursework equivalent to a bachelor’s level degree may become registered as a nurse with a state licensing board prior to completion of the bridge program. Upon achievement of a state license, the individual may be appointed on a temporary basis and later converted to a permanent appointment after successful completion and graduation from the bridge program (Reference VA Handbook 5005 – Appendix G6). Or in cases of graduates of foreign professional nursing schools, possession of a current, full, active, and unrestricted registration will meet the requirement for graduation from an approved school to warrant an appointment as a nurse who has completed an associated degree/entry‑level nursing education program. Credit for foreign nursing education higher than an associate degree/entry level requires a formal degree equivalency validation from a recognized equivalency evaluation accepted by VA (such as International Consultants of Delaware – ICD). Current, full, active, and unrestricted registration as a graduate professional nurse in a U.S. State, Territory, Commonwealth, or Washington, DC. Graduate Nurse Technician (GNT) Exception: Candidates who otherwise meet the basic education requirements but lack the required licensure may be appointed at the entry step of the grade and level applicable to the completed nursing education as a GNT on a 120‑day temporary appointment while actively pursuing licensure (may be extended up to two years on a case‑by‑case basis). NOTE: Grandfathering Provision – All persons currently employed in VHA in the 0610 series and performing the duties as described in the qualification standard on the effective date of the standard (1/29/2024) are considered to have met all qualification requirements for the grade held including positive education and licensure/certification. Grade Determinations: The following scope – education and dimension criteria must be met in determining the grade assignment of candidates (and if appropriate the level within a grade). Detailed dimension requirements are available at Grade/Level specific education and experience requirements (summary of Nurse I‑II‑III levels with ADN, BSN, MSN, and doctoral options). Physical Requirements: This position may require potentially long periods of heavy lifting (45+ lbs), moderate lifting (15‑44 lbs), heavy carrying, moderate carrying, light carrying, straight pulling, pushing, reaching, use of fingers, walking, standing, repeated bending, mental and muscular coordination, vision and hearing standards, and fine manipulation tasks. Duties CTVHCS is undergoing a cultural change from a disease‑focused approach to a health and wellbeing approach to implement the Whole Health System of Care. This is a VA‑wide initiative to provide a comprehensive and systematic approach to improve healthcare delivery at all stages of Veteran care. All staff participate in shifting from an episodic, siloed approach to an interdisciplinary, holistic approach that emphasizes self‑care within the broader context of well‑being. The Gastrointestinal Nurse duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to: executing a streamlined approach to receiving, triaging, and directing timely, coordinated care; triaging incoming referrals; discussing available care options; providing scheduling guidance; serving as a resource within the service; guiding Veterans through their full range of care options including internal and community care; acting as a liaison between ordering or referring VA providers and specialty care services; complying with VA‑mandated health information solutions for referral care; working collaboratively with the Office of Integrated Veteran Care to triage Request for Services (RFS); and being responsible and accountable for all elements of the nursing process when providing or supervising direct patient care. Assesses, plans, implements, and evaluates care based on age‑specific components; assumes responsibility for coordination of care focused on patient education, self‑management, and customer satisfaction throughout the continuum of care.
