General manager, independent college newspaper

Manage the newspaper’s annual operating budget and ensure fiscal responsibility

Oversee payroll, purchasing, bookkeeping and financial reporting

Identify opportunities for growth

Supervise business office staff and coordinate daily operations

Collaborate with student editors on non-content matters in a supportive, professional manner

Build and maintain strong relationships with campus departments, vendors, and community partners

Help develop and implement short- and long-term strategic and operational goals

Serve as a liaison to the newspaper’s board and ensure effective communication across all stakeholders

Promote an efficient, inclusive, and mission-driven workplace culture

A Bachelor’s degree , preferably in business, management, communications, media, or a related field, or equivalent professional experience

At least three years of management, supervisory, and/or sales experience

Strong financial management , budgeting, and accounting skills

The ability to work independently while collaborating closely with multiple partners , including student editors, university personnel, vendors, advertisers and members of the WUSMI board.

Established methods for time management and professional communication that ensure deadlines are met, and internal and external partners receive punctual updates

Experience with news media, social media, or a college newspaper is a plus

Familiarity with Macintosh computers, desktop publishing software and other standard business and media tools as well as knowledge of website infrastructure is a plus
