Position Summary

The Law Office of Mario Varela, PLLC is seeking a Texas-licensed attorney with experience or interest in family law litigation to join our growing practice in Houston.

We are looking for an attorney who can independently handle family law matters, including court hearings, trials, drafting pleadings and motions, discovery, client consultations, negotiations, mediation, and managing cases from start to finish.

Key Responsibilities

• Draft and review a wide range of legal documents, including pleadings, motions, briefs, discovery requests/responses, and correspondence.
• Propound and respond to discovery, take and defend depositions, and prepare cases for hearings and trial.
• Represent clients in court proceedings, hearings, and trials.
• Conduct thorough legal research and provide well-reasoned analysis and recommendations.
• Manage cases from intake through resolution, ensuring deadlines and court requirements are met.
• Communicate effectively with clients, courts, and opposing counsel in both English and Spanish.
• Collaborate with colleagues on case strategy, knowledge sharing, and workload management.
• Provide high-quality client service with professionalism, discretion, and empathy.
• Attend mediations and settlement conferences.
• Maintain accurate case files and billing records.
• Perform other related duties as assigned.
• Qualifications Education & Experience
• Family law litigation experience is preferred; however, candidates with strong litigation experience in other practice areas and a genuine interest in family law are encouraged to apply.
• Licensed to practice law in Texas
• Strong writing, courtroom, and client communication skills
• Ability to appear in person in Houston-area courts
• Spanish is preferred, but not required
• We are open to discussing full-time, part-time, contract, or Of Counsel arrangements with the right candidate. Initially, the position is expected to handle approximately 20 billable hours per week, with the opportunity to transition into a full-time role as the practice continues to grow.
