Diesel Mechanic
$28 - $32 per hourJob Title: Diesel Mechanic
Job Description
This role focuses on maintaining and repairing mobile cement trucks and related equipment to ensure safe, reliable, and efficient operation. You will perform preventative maintenance, diagnose and repair mechanical and electrical issues, and support mechanics both in the shop and on public roadways. The position requires strong hands-on mechanical skills, the ability to work safely at heights and in outdoor conditions, and a commitment to accurate documentation of all completed work.
Responsibilities
- Perform repairs and maintenance on mobile cement trucks and other diesel-powered vehicles to ensure optimal performance and safety.
- Assist mechanics with maintenance and repair of various types of mobile equipment in the shop and, when needed, on public roadways.
- Conduct preventative maintenance services, including changing brakes, oil, and filters, to maximize equipment availability and reduce downtime.
- Diagnose and repair hydraulic systems, suspensions, drive-train components, air conditioning systems, air brakes, and basic electrical systems (12V/24V).
- Perform minor repairs and maintenance on support equipment such as forklifts and pneumatic tools.
- Use computer diagnostics and other tools to identify mechanical and electrical issues and implement effective repairs.
- Carry out preventative maintenance inspections and follow established procedures to keep equipment in safe working condition.
- Accurately log and document all completed work, including repairs, inspections, and parts used.
- Follow all safety procedures when working on catwalks and at heights of 60–80 feet, and when working in an open garage and outdoor environment.
- Collaborate effectively with team members to complete repairs and projects, including occasional overnight work as needed.
- Lift, carry, and move tools, parts, and equipment weighing at least 50 lbs, and occasionally up to 100 lbs, in a safe manner.
- Train and develop skills in brakes, AC systems, hydraulics, welding, and pneumatics, with the goal of achieving higher levels of certification.
- Support operations by working 50–60 hours per week, including overtime and overnight projects when requested.
- Communicate clearly with supervisors, drivers, and team members about equipment status, repair needs, and safety concerns.
Essential Skills
- At least 3 years of experience repairing systems on diesel vehicles and/or trucks for entry into the role, with higher consideration for candidates with 5 or more years of experience.
- A minimum of 2 years of tenure with previous employers listed on the resume.
- Hands-on experience with diesel engines, diesel brakes, and diesel transmissions.
- Proven experience diagnosing and repairing hydraulic systems, suspensions, drive-train components, air conditioning systems, air brakes, and basic electrical systems (12V/24V).
- Previous experience performing preventative maintenance inspections and procedures on diesel trucks or heavy equipment.
- Strong mechanical aptitude and effective problem-solving skills in a fast-paced maintenance environment.
- Ability to use computer-based diagnostics and standard automotive and diesel repair tools.
- Capability to lift and carry at least 50 lbs and occasionally up to 100 lbs safely and repeatedly.
- Ability to work on catwalks and at heights of 60–80 feet while following all safety protocols.
- Willingness and ability to work 50–60 hours per week, including overtime and occasional overnight projects.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills for documenting work and interacting with team members.
- Ownership of and ability to bring the required minimal tool list to perform daily tasks effectively.
- Willingness to train and become certified in brakes, AC systems, hydraulics, welding, and pneumatics.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
- Ready-mix or related heavy equipment industry experience is a plus.
- Experience with electrical systems up to 480 VAC and control systems is a plus.
- Commercial Driver’s License is preferred.
- Familiarity with lubrication, automotive repair, diesel trucks, hydraulics, pneumatics, transmissions, and heavy equipment maintenance.
- Interest in pursuing advanced certifications and progressing toward a Master Mechanic level.
Why Work Here?
The company offers a clear pathway for professional growth, including the opportunity to sign up for certifications in specialized areas and earn pay increases every six months as you advance toward Master Mechanic status. Once converted to permanent, employees receive a comprehensive benefits package that typically includes medical, dental, vision, 401(k), paid time off, holidays, and a voucher for steel-toe footwear. The organization promotes long-term career stability, with many employees choosing to stay and retire from the company, reflecting a supportive culture and strong commitment to its workforce.
Work Environment
You will work primarily in an open garage environment located in a gravel yard, often in a hot climate with shaded outdoor work areas rather than fully enclosed, climate-controlled facilities. Training typically runs from approximately 6:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. for about two weeks, Monday through Saturday, and you will follow a similar schedule during this period. After training, you will generally work from around 6:00 a.m. until the work is finished, which may extend to 12-hour shifts and include overnight work so you can support drivers as they arrive and depart. The role involves working at multiple plant locations, including larger, high-activity sites and smaller plants, and may require passing through secured gates and working near active ready-mix operations. The position is physically demanding, requiring frequent lifting, climbing on catwalks, and working at heights of 60–80 feet, as well as regular use of diesel repair tools, pneumatic tools, forklifts, and diagnostic equipment. Appropriate work attire includes durable clothing suitable for an outdoor, industrial environment, along with steel-toe footwear as required for safety.
