Schedule: Evening Shift (5x8 Hours)
- Weekdays: 2:00 PM – 10:00 PM
- Saturday: 9:00 AM – 5:30 PM
- Sunday: 7:00 AM – 3:30 PM
Schedule may vary based on department needs and will be discussed at the time of hire.

Skills Required
Primary (Must-Have):
- Minimum 2 years of Financial Counseling experience in a healthcare setting
- Strong knowledge of Medi-Cal eligibility and enrollment processes
- Experience with insurance verification and authorization processes
- Understanding of government-sponsored healthcare programs, including California Children's Services (CCS)
- Strong customer service and patient communication skills
- Ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment
- Excellent organizational and time management skills
- Strong verbal and written communication skills
- Ability to collaborate effectively with cross-functional healthcare teams
- Experience assisting patients with financial assistance and payment plan options
Secondary (Good to Have):
- Experience working within hospital or pediatric healthcare environments
- Knowledge of revenue cycle and patient access operations
- Familiarity with healthcare reimbursement processes
- Experience resolving patient account and billing concerns
- Bilingual communication skills
Position Overview
The Financial Counselor plays a critical role in helping patients and families navigate healthcare financial processes and access available resources. This position focuses on eliminating financial barriers to care by assisting uninsured and underinsured patients with insurance coverage options, government-sponsored healthcare programs, and payment solutions.
The ideal candidate will have strong healthcare financial counseling experience, knowledge of insurance processes, and the ability to provide compassionate support to patients and families during challenging situations.
Roles & Responsibilities
- Assist uninsured and underinsured families with applications for government-sponsored healthcare programs, including Medi-Cal and California Children's Services (CCS).
- Guide patients and families through insurance processes, including benefit verification, authorizations, and coverage requirements.
- Educate patients regarding financial responsibilities, payment plans, and available financial assistance programs.
- Support account resolution efforts and help patients understand available payment options.
- Collaborate with Social Work, Case Management, Revenue Cycle, Physician Billing, and other departments to ensure coordinated patient support.
- Provide accurate and timely financial counseling services to patients and families.
- Maintain documentation and records related to financial counseling activities.
- Stay informed on healthcare coverage regulations, reimbursement programs, and eligibility requirements.
- Ensure compliance with organizational policies, regulatory requirements, and patient confidentiality standards.
- Perform additional duties and special projects as assigned.
Reporting Structure
- Reports to the Lead Financial Counselor and Patient Access Manager.
- Works under general supervision while collaborating closely with multidisciplinary healthcare teams.
Minimum Qualifications
- High School Diploma, GED, or equivalent required.
- Minimum 2 years of Financial Counselor experience within a healthcare environment.
- Strong understanding of Medi-Cal programs and insurance authorization processes.
- Excellent organizational, communication, and multitasking abilities.
- Ability to effectively interact with patients, families, providers, and internal departments.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience working in pediatric healthcare settings.
- Knowledge of healthcare reimbursement and revenue cycle processes.
- Experience with patient financial assistance programs and eligibility screening.
- Familiarity with hospital registration and patient access workflows.
Work Environment
- Onsite healthcare environment.
- Direct interaction with patients, families, insurance providers, and healthcare teams.
- Fast-paced setting requiring strong multitasking and customer service skills.
- Evening and weekend schedule as required.
