About Central’s Department of Counseling and Student Development Central’s department provides mental health counseling and a range of student development services to support academic success and help students resolve emotional, interpersonal, behavioral, and other personal challenges. Services promote mental health and help students acquire skills and resources to thrive in a university setting. Position Profile The Assistant Counselor provides mental/behavioral health services including, but not limited to, individual, group, family, and couples counseling, crisis intervention, risk assessment, case management, and campus/community outreach. The role assists with student orientation programs and other university events, represents the department on campus and community-based task forces, and provides consultation, workshops, and trainings. The counselor maintains positive relationships with referral sources and community providers in the greater New Britain region and beyond. Education and Licensing Doctorate or master’s degree from an accredited institution in clinical or counseling psychology, social work, marriage and family therapy, or other mental health related fields. State of Connecticut licensure in Psychology (Psy.D., Ph.D., Ed.D.), Professional Counseling (LPC), Social Work (LCSW), or Marriage and Family Therapy (LMFT). Experience and Training Minimum three years experience working with high-risk adolescents and/or young adults, and with complex and/or long-standing mental health challenges Sensitivity to diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, gender identity, sexual orientation, and ethnic backgrounds of students Electronic health record experience Proficient with Microsoft Office 365 (Word, Outlook, PowerPoint) Ideal Candidate Preference will be given to applicants with the following: Three years post-master’s counseling experience at a college/university counseling center and/or agency/private practice serving college-age adolescents/adults Experience working with graduate student interns and assistants To Apply To begin the application process, select the “Apply” button and electronically submit the following documents by August 4, 2026 .
