Your RoleAre you passionate about building strong business partnerships, navigating complex commercial matters, and delivering practical legal solutions? As Commercial Counsel at Aptiv, you will provide legal support primarily for Aptiv’s commercial activities in the United States while also supporting cross-border transactions, global customer and supplier relationships, and other international matters.Based in Troy, Michigan, you will serve as a trusted partner to leaders across Sales, Purchasing, Finance, Engineering, Quality, and other support functions. You will provide clear, business-focused advice that protects Aptiv’s interests, appropriately manages risk, and advances the company’s commercial objectives in a fast-paced global environment.ROLES AND RESPONSIBILITIESCommercial Counseling & Contract ManagementAct as a primary legal contact for assigned U.S. businesses and functions on a broad range of commercial and general counseling mattersDraft, review, advise on, and negotiate agreements with customers, suppliers, and other third partiesSupport U.S., cross-border, and global commercial transactionsDevelop and implement contracting and negotiation strategies that maximize commercial value, protect Aptiv’s interests, and appropriately allocate riskDevelop and maintain contract templates, playbooks, and practical legal guidanceRisk Management & Dispute ResolutionIdentify and anticipate legal and commercial risks and communicate them clearly to stakeholdersDevelop practical, solution-oriented risk mitigation strategiesSupport the strategic management of customer and supplier relationshipsAnalyze and resolve contract, warranty, pricing, quality, supply, and other commercial disputesCoordinate legal support for litigation, compliance, investigations, intellectual property, product safety, corporate governance, and other specialty mattersSelect, instruct, and manage external counsel when appropriate, with attention to quality, efficiency, and costBusiness Partnership & Global CollaborationPartner closely with leaders and stakeholders across Sales, Purchasing, Finance, Engineering, Quality, and other support functionsCollaborate with legal colleagues across regions and corporate legal specialists to support global customers, suppliers, transactions, and projectsWork independently on U.S. matters while promoting a coordinated and consistent global approachContribute to global legal team initiatives, knowledge sharing, and best practices consistent with a One Aptiv approachCompliance, Training & Legal ExcellenceServe as a compliance champion and help reinforce Aptiv’s commitment to doing the right thing, the right waySupport compliance investigations, training, and related initiativesPrepare and deliver training on contracting, ethics, compliance, and other legal risksMaintain current knowledge of relevant U.S. legal and industry developmentsCoordinate advice on non-U.S. law with qualified local counsel when appropriateYour BackgroundJuris Doctor degree from an ABA-accredited law schoolActive membership in good standing in at least one U.S. state barFive or more years of relevant legal experience advising multinational organizations on sophisticated commercial matters and transactionsExperience gained at a leading law firm, within a corporate legal department, or through a combination of bothStrong experience drafting and negotiating complex commercial agreements under U.S. lawExperience supporting cross-border or international commercial mattersDemonstrated ability to apply legal expertise with sound judgment, business acumen, and a practical commercial perspectiveAbility to manage multiple complex matters, competing priorities, and stakeholder expectations within a fast-paced global environmentAbility to work independently and lead U.S. matters while collaborating effectively across regions, functions, and time zonesExcellent written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to explain complex legal issues clearly and conciselyStrong relationship-building, influencing, critical-thinking, problem-solving, and project-management skillsProfessional presence, integrity, and confidence to constructively challenge decisions or actions when requiredComfort using Microsoft Office applications, AI tools, and legal technology platforms, with a willingness to adopt new tools and ways of workingExperience within automotive, manufacturing, technology, or another global industrial environment is preferredWhy Join AptivYou grow at Aptiv.Aptiv's winning culture is global by design.
