SUMMARY

The College and Career Readiness Advisor is a student mentor and coach, assisting high school students in linking academic, personal and professional goals to ensure persistence to graduation and successful transition to-and-through college, a technical development program or entry into the workforce. The College and Career Advisor serves as a liaison to services and resources on high school campus and at Boys & Girls Clubs as well as the broader community including business, healthcare, education and non‑profit organizations. The College and Career Advisor works collaboratively with both on‑campus Boys & Girls Club management and staff as well as high school program administrators assisting, when appropriate, the development, coordination, and implementation of services and activities to improve student success, and services and activities to improve retention, course completion and graduation. Under the direction of the Vice President, Teen Services – College and Career Readiness, the College and Career Advisor will serve as resource to students and families offering guidance and support as to post‑secondary education and career planning; and to respond to the academic, social and emotional needs of students. In addition, the College and Career Advisor will develop, manage, deliver and assess a comprehensive college and career advising program. Our ideal candidate will have experience working with diverse populations, demonstrate knowledge of college and career advising techniques, contribute to college and career readiness culture, and integrate students, families, staff and the community into the program.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

Develop and/or implement innovative programs and activities that prepare youth for post‑secondary success. Manage and support a caseload of high school students through the college application process and other processes pertaining post‑secondary training or workforce placement. Advise students and families as to post‑secondary opportunities including college, technical programs and employment. Guide individuals and groups of students to develop education plans and career awareness. Advise, counsel and support high school graduates during their post‑secondary education or entry into the workforce through check‑ins, meetings, calls, referrals or other engagement strategies. Counsel individual students and small groups in response to academic, social or emotional needs. Serve as a resource for students to connect with off‑campus health and wellness services. Develop and maintain diverse partnerships that provide opportunities to students including business, healthcare, education and non‑profit organizations. Lead student outreach and recruitment efforts, including marketing and promotional materials to recruit and retain youth. Ensure that student and program data is entered into the appropriate tracking system. Build and maintain relationships with youth and their families, partner high schools, staff, counselors, volunteers and other partners. Maintain the safety of the school, youth and appropriate staff. Participate in special programs or events, as directed. Take the initiative in researching best practice programs and proven methods for youth development.

ESSENTIAL JOB DUTIES

Leadership Manage programs, activities and services that prepare youth for success and that create a school and club environment that facilitates achievement of Youth Development Outcomes. Provide a healthy and safe environment, ensuring facilities, equipment and supplies are maintained. Lead, inspire, and motivate youth to prepare for higher education. Strategic Planning Implement and evaluate programs, services and activities to ensure they meet stated objectives and member/students’ needs and interests. Compile regular reports reflecting all activities, attendance and participation. Serve as a thought partner to organizational leadership, as needed, when it is related to college & career. Resource Management Manage site financial resources, assisting in the development of annual budgets. Control expenditures against budget. Ensure stock of supplies is regularly maintained. Internal: Maintain close, daily contact with Club professional staff to interpret and explain organizational mission, program objectives and standards, discuss issues, and provide/receive information. Adapt to change as the organization grows in teen services and college readiness programs. External: Maintain contact with external community groups, school principal, teachers and counselors, members' parents and others to create strong working relationships to promote the effectiveness of the Club and programs. Requirements

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Bachelor’s/Master’s degree from an accredited college or university 3-5 years of experience working with high school aged youth Ability to navigate high school, college application and financial aid systems Experience steering youth through the college application process Strong written and oral communication skills Strong presentation skills Negative TB test CPR and First Aid Certification within three months of hire Background check clearance Clean driving recordReliable transportation Ability to speak, read and write in Spanish is strongly preferred

JOB COMPETENCIES (KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES)

Essential Knowledge Understanding of the developmental needs of young people, particularly teens ages 13-18. Including but not limited to cultural competence and familiarity of youth development tools and resources across the Silicon Valley. Knowledge of budget control and management. Knowledge of college going process including but not limited to application, financial aid, major exploration, and other resources. Competent in the use of Microsoft 365, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook and Google Drive. Ability to communicate effectively both oral and written; research, develop, present, and promote projects; work independently; prioritize work and meet deadlines. Ability to implement policy and procedures and interpret data. Strong communication, public relations, and interpersonal skills. Demonstrate the use of appropriate and effective techniques to encourage community and parent involvement. Considerable knowledge of current literature, trends, and developments in the field. Ability to develop long‑term goals and objectives. Ability to evaluate the effectiveness of programs and make recommendations for improvements. Innovative: Able to look beyond the standard solutions. Project Management Skills : Able to plan, implement, and supervise safe, quality programs for youth). Fundraising: Able to plan and implement successful activities aimed at generating funds for the clubhouse.

Purchase supplies and equipment. Work with staff on special events Other duties as assigned by the Vice President, Teen Services - College and Career Readiness

WORKING CONDITIONS

Boys & Girls Clubs are often stressful, busy, and noisy environments. The Advisor is expected to work in situations where many member and facilities related activities take place at the same time.

SALARY

The pay range for this position is $80,000 - $85,000, commensurate with experience.

LOCATION

This position will primarily work from Milpitas Unified School District. With occasional travel between BGCSV’s clubhouses, schools, and Silicon Valley.
