RN Neuroscience Stepdown

Job Summary:

The Level 2 Registered Nurse (RN) in the ICU Stepdown unit provides specialized nursing care to a diverse neurosurgical patient population requiring complex hemodynamic and neurological monitoring. This role involves managing patients with brain tumors, spinal malformations, and other neurocritical conditions, performing neuro checks, and administering treatments such as EVDs, drains, and specialized drips. The nurse collaborates with multidisciplinary teams to ensure high-quality patient care in a fast-paced, high-acuity environment. Responsibilities:

• Perform frequent neurological assessments including Q1 neuro checks.
• Manage and monitor patients with external ventricular drains (EVDs), lumbar and subdural drains.
• Administer specialized therapies such as 3% normal saline, Cardene drips, and arterial line monitoring.
• Care for patients undergoing carotid endarterectomy, aneurysm coiling/clipping, DBS insertion, and VP shunts.
• Manage seizure patients and provide appropriate interventions.
• Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams including neurosurgeons, neurologists, and other healthcare professionals.
• Maintain accurate documentation and communicate patient status effectively.
• Adhere to hospital policies, protocols, and safety standards in a neurocritical care setting.

Required Skills & Certifications:

• Active Registered Nurse license in New York State only.
• Minimum of two years nursing experience.
• BLS certification (American Heart Association only).
• Telemetry experience.
• Stepdown/Progressive Care Unit (PCU) experience.
• High acuity stroke and neurosurgery nursing experience.
• NIH Stroke Scale (NIHSS) certification.

Preferred Skills & Certifications:

• ACLS certification (American Heart Association preferred).

Special Considerations:

• Work includes weekends, holidays, on-call, callback, and charge nurse responsibilities as needed.
• Must be able to perform duties in a high-acuity neurocritical care environment requiring frequent patient assessments and interventions.

Scheduling:

• Rotating shifts including day, evening, and night shifts.
• 36 or 48 hours per week based on unit needs.
