If so, the role of Veterinarian at the ASPCA’s Recovery & Rehabilitation Center (R&R Center) in Pawling, NY might be right for you! Working Hours & Location This is an on-site role at the R&R Center in Pawling, NY. The standard schedule is Sunday through Wednesday, 8am–6pm, with flexibility required for evenings, weekends, and holidays. The position may require up to 10% travel. Earnings & Compensation Target annual salary range: $148,000 – $156,000. The role may offer a signing bonus and/or relocation stipend. Compensation may increase based on performance. Develop low‑stress diagnostic and treatment plans for diverse illnesses and injuries. Perform surgeries, dental procedures, and other procedures with anesthesia and multimodal analgesia. Administer vaccines and preventative treatments per protocol. Guide and perform humane euthanasia when indicated. Coordinate with partner veterinary clinics for advanced care and referrals. Complete veterinary inspection certificates for animal transfers and releases. Shelter Population Health & Daily Medical Oversight Lead daily rounds; ensure individual patients and shelter population receive daily assessment and intervention. Monitor health; identify outbreaks and implement control measures. Utilize quarantine/isolation appropriately; balance physical and behavioral needs. Report medical progress and significant concerns to Senior Director. Collaboration & Communication Maintain regular communication with veterinary colleagues across ASPCA programs. Collaborate with behavior and sheltering staff for holistic care. Communicate risks and options in clear, objective language to staff and volunteers. Attend veterinary services, cross‑functional, and all‑staff meetings. Records, Legal Documentation & Reporting Maintain thorough, high‑quality veterinary records of all exams, diagnostics, diagnoses, treatments, and recommendations. Maintain chain‑of‑custody and evidence disposition records. Provide expert testimony in court when requested. Track and report time, time off, and travel expenses. Maintain confidentiality of criminal case information. Animal Welfare, Safety & Compliance Create a safe, compassionate environment using low‑stress handling. Follow OSHA protocols and ASPCA R&R SOPs. Provide input on SOPs and related materials. Steward R&R Center assets responsibly. Training & Mentorship Assist in staff training on shelter disease control, nutrition, preventative care, and monitoring. Mentor staff on shelter medicine principles and protocols. Contribute to a culture of continuous improvement and learning. Stay current on shelter medicine practices and obtain continuing education as required. Cross‑Program Support Deploy with other ASPCA teams as program needs arise. Qualifications & Education Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) or equivalent from an accredited veterinary college. Eligibility for NYS licensure; current NYS license strongly preferred. Minimum 2 years clinical practice as a small animal DVM; shelter medicine experience strongly preferred. Fear Free® Veterinary certification (approx.9hrs) and shelter certification within 60days, or USDA certification within 1year of hire. Strong clinical judgment, surgical skills, and population health management. Fluent in MSWord, Excel, PowerPoint; familiarity with shelter software or Salesforce a plus. Excellent written and oral communication; ability to clearly explain medical conditions. Ability to work efficiently in a high‑volume, fast‑paced environment. Physical ability to lift and carry animals (50lb unassisted, 100lb with assistance) and handling equipment. Capacity to use appropriate PPE (coveralls, respirators, booties).
