Supervisory Diagnostic Radiologic Technologist

Summary This position is located within the Diagnostic Imaging Services at the Joseph Maxwell Cleland Atlanta VA Medical Center. The incumbent serves as a Supervisory Diagnostic Radiologic Technologist. Qualifications Basic Requirements United States Citizenship: Non‑citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy. Education: Completion of a full‑time training course of at least 24 months in a post‑high school diagnostic radiologic technology program, evidenced by a certificate or associate degree, accredited by the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology (JRCERT) or a recognized accrediting agency. Certification: All applicants must be certified in general radiologic technology by the American Registry of Radiologic Technology – Radiography (ARRT) (R). Grade Determinations GS‑12 with at least one year of experience comparable to the next lower grade level that fully meets the KSAs at that level. Supervisory assignments include chief radiologic technologist at medical facilities with comprehensive and complex radiographic and imaging programs. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Ability to perform the full range of supervisory duties, including assignment of work, performance evaluations, recommendations for appointments, awards, advancements, disciplinary actions, and identification of continuing education and training needs. Ability to serve as a consultant to other facility personnel in evaluating and planning radiologic technology services for the most complex cases. Ability to participate in research studies and/or act as a consultant to those conducting research. Ability to consult with staff and resident physicians through patient presentation, attending ward rounds, specialty clinics, and conferences. Ability to assess, plan, and evaluate the delivery of radiologic technology services at the facility. Preferred Experience Prior experience as a modality (CT, US, MRI, IR, diagnostic X‑ray) supervisor or chief technologist. Experience in radiology orders management. Experience in employee and labor relations. Physical Requirements Regular physical exertion, including standing, walking, and sitting for long periods. Frequent bending, twisting, lifting, positioning patients, and carrying, pushing, or pulling moderately heavy objects. Duties Full responsibility for technical aspects and patient care functions within the General Radiology, CT, MRI, Ultrasound, and Interventional Radiology sections. Supervisory responsibility over staff in these sections, including direct‑report of 6 first‑line section supervisors and 1 lead technologist. Serve as the second‑line supervisor for nonsupervisory diagnostic radiologic technologists and medical instrument technicians. Plan, organize, and direct ongoing developments of the radiology service, including short‑term and long‑term strategic planning. Review VA‑0750 performance evaluations for technologist staff reporting to first‑line section supervisors. Perform second‑level supervisory responsibilities of all diagnostic radiologic and medical instrument technologists. Plan work schedules to assure an even flow and distribution of work. Explain work requirements and assign work daily and weekly, accounting for weekend and evening shifts as needed. Set deadlines and priorities, develop operating instructions, identify equipment requirements, and recommend methods to improve work quality and productivity. Operate independently within the framework of identified objectives and strategic planning for the health care system, medical center, and imaging service. Strive to meet the needs of customers while supporting VA missions. Communicate and treat customers (Veterans, families, Veterans representatives, visitors, and all VA staff) courteously, tactfully, and respectfully. Provide customers with consistent information according to established policies and procedures. Handle conflict and problems constructively and appropriately. Familiar with and provide age‑specific care appropriate to the cognitive, emotional, cultural, and chronological maturation needs of the patient. Protect printed and electronic files containing sensitive data in accordance with the Privacy Act, federal regulations, VA statutes, and VHA policy. Promote a continuous culture of safety for veterans, families, visitors, and employees. Cooperate in efforts to improve patient safety and eliminate potential events, including reporting events resulting in actual or potential injury. Implement and monitor OSHA life‑safety management, health, and environment procedures. Implement and monitor infection control practices, including hand washing, universal precautions, isolation procedures, and TB requirements. Benefits Work Schedule: Monday–Friday, 7:30 am–4:00 pm (subject to change based on agency need). Pay: Competitive salary with regular increases; higher step rate may be determined for exceptional qualifications. Paid Time Off: 37–50 days annual paid time off (13–26 days annual leave, 13 days sick leave, 11 paid federal holidays). Parental Leave: Up to 12 weeks paid after 12 months of employment.
