Contract Interventional Cardiologist

Provide on-call interventional cardiology services to veterans at the VA Salt Lake City Health Care System. This is an as-needed, fully on-site assignment centered on cardiac catheterization, complex percutaneous interventions, urgent consultation, and management of patients before, during, and after procedures.
Primary Responsibilities
• Provide interventional cardiology consultation and direct patient care within the physician's VA-approved scope of practice and privileges.
• Perform and manage cardiac catheterization and interventional procedures, including pericardiocentesis, endocardial biopsy, and placement of intra-aortic balloon devices.
• Perform percutaneous revascularization procedures, including balloon angioplasty, atherectomy, endoluminal stenting, intravascular ultrasound, intracoronary Doppler flow measurements, and rheolytic thrombectomy.
• Support high-risk coronary and peripheral vascular percutaneous procedures and manage patients before, during, and after intervention.
• Report on time for assigned clinic or cardiac catheterization laboratory start times and use the required VA email process to document check-in and check-out.
• Document all care promptly in the VA electronic health record; communicate test results, follow VA medication policies, and provide coordinated discharge and follow-up instructions.
• Complete required QA/QI documentation and report patient-safety incidents through VA channels as soon as practicable and within 24 hours.
Schedule and On-Call Expectations
• Work is strictly on call and as needed. The VA anticipates issuing the schedule approximately 30 days in advance.
• Assigned coverage may include normal clinic/cardiac catheterization laboratory hours and off-hours when the clinic is closed, including evenings, weekends, and federal holidays.
• The on-call physician must be reachable by telephone within five minutes and able to report on site within 30 minutes.
• The coverage model requires at least two credentialed physicians. Reliable availability and cooperation with continuity and backup coverage are essential.
Minimum Qualifications
• Board Certified or Board Eligible in Interventional Cardiology and able to meet applicable American College of Cardiology and VA standards.
• Completion of an accredited residency training program leading to eligibility for certification through the American Board of Internal Medicine in cardiology.
• Current, full, and unrestricted medical license in a U.S. state, territory, commonwealth, or the District of Columbia. The solicitation excludes physicians who currently have or have ever had a restricted, suspended, revoked, voluntarily surrendered, or denied license.
• Current BLS and ACLS certification (or accepted equivalent), active DEA certificate, and National Provider Identifier (NPI).
• Recent, relevant interventional cardiology experience and demonstrated proficiency in the procedures and patient-management responsibilities described above.
• Fluency in spoken and written English and the ability to work effectively with VA clinical personnel, patients, and support teams.
• Availability to begin the VA onboarding process at the time of contract award and ability to complete credentialing, privileging, occupational-health, security/access, and mandatory-training requirements before beginning patient care.
Preferred Background
Prior experience in an academic medical center or VA environment is valuable. Relevant training in teamwork, communication, and patient-safety outcomes should be documented when available.
Credentialing and Compliance
Selected physicians must provide timely documentation supporting education, training, clinical experience, licensure, board status, CME, DEA, NPI, and professional liability coverage. Required health documentation includes current tuberculosis screening and evidence of required immunity/vaccination, including MMR, varicella, Tdap, influenza, and hepatitis B/bloodborne-pathogen compliance. Candidates must satisfy federal work-authorization and screening requirements and may not be excluded from federal health care programs
