Special Education Teacher

Job Summary

Qualifications: 1. Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university 2. Possess and maintain a valid Alabama Professional Educator Certificate in special education and/or collaborative education. 3. Meet background clearance requirements as specified by Alabama statutes and State Board of Education regulations.

FLSA: Exempt Reports To: Principal/Director of Special Programs Terms Of Employment: Salary and benefits shall be paid consistent with the system's approved compensation plan. Length of the work year and hours of employment shall be those established by the system.

Required Duties And Responsibilities: 1. Demonstrate commitment to and support for the vision and mission of the system and school. 2. Maintains confidentiality of any Board of Education business, its staff, and its students. 3. Demonstrates knowledge of the principles and practice of effective instruction for the special education classroom. 4. Demonstrates professionalism in appearance and in attitude at all times. 5. Demonstrates and models regular and predictable attendance. 6. Uses technology for communication, presentations, research, data analysis, budgeting, record keeping, reporting, scheduling, and other job responsibilities as required. 7. Implements curriculum and programming specific to the needs of all students. 8. Develops and implements an individualized education plan (IEP) that meets the individual goals and abilities of students and is consistent with federal, state and local IDEA guidelines. 9. Develops lesson plans to meet school system's goals using Alabama State Course(s) of Study and/or Alabama Alternate Achievement Standards (when applicable). 10. As an inclusion teacher, collaborates with general education teacher to plan and employ a variety of appropriate instructional/learning strategies and activities to help ensure that each student reaches maximum educational potential. 11. As small group setting teacher, plans and employs a variety of appropriate instructional/learning strategies and activities utilizing Extended Standards and Alabama Alternate Assessment (AAA) goals to ensure that each student reaches maximum educational potential. 12. Implements and updates the Functional Behavior Assessment (FBA), Behavior Intervention Plan (BIP) as required. 13. Actively participates and works with school personnel and other IEP team members in the selection of curriculum goals, specialized equipment, and other instructional materials, to provide the student with maximum learning opportunities. 14. Documents student progress by efficiently maintaining and submitting appropriate records and progress reports. 15. Follows rules, guidelines, and procedures of Section 504 and IDEA amendments. 16. Effectively implements special education processes such as eligibility, IEP, FBA, BIP, manifestation determination, etc. 17. Maintains student records and submits required reports and data according to established protocols and timelines. 18. Participates in system adopted restraint training as requested and approved by the Central Office special education staff. 19. Collaborates with teachers, local school administration, and counselors on matters related to special education, IEPs, FBAs, BIPs, disciplining students in special education, gifted education, accommodations/modifications to the curriculum, and all other items that may fall under special/gifted education. 20. Communicates, through verbal or written/electronic correspondence, with parents/guardians about student progress, concerns, and academic achievement. 21. Collaborates with local school administration and counselors on ongoing assessments to monitor student progress, interprets and uses data for instructional planning and teaching, and program evaluation. 22. Demonstrates high-expectations for self and for students, and creates an environment that has goals that are both rigorous and achievable. 23. Manages the behavior of learning in the classroom and participates in the management of students in other areas of the school and school grounds. 24. Responds to inquiries and requests in a timely and positive manner. 25. Uses effective collaboration skills to work as a productive team member. 26. Serves on school system committees, tasks forces, and representative groups as required. 27. Adheres to school system rules, administrative procedures, local Board policies, and state, federal, and local laws. 28. Reports absences and takes leave in accordance with Board policies and procedures.

29. Attends local meetings, workshops, and state meetings for professional development. 30. Assume other reasonable and equitable job-related duties as assigned by the immediate supervisor.

Knowledge, Skills, And Abilities: 1. Knowledge of curriculum development, effective classroom practices, and professional development. 2. Good public relations skills. 3. Ability to understand the unique needs and learning characteristics of students. 4. Demonstrates the ability to multi-task, to delegate appropriately, and to prioritize tasks efficiently. 5. Knowledge of and ability to use and facilitate the use of various forms of education technology and assist in instructional practices 6. Superior leadership, collaboration, and interpersonal skills and ability to be an instructional leader across multiple settings. 7. Ability to work collaboratively as a team member with large and/or diverse groups. 8. Proficiency in oral, written, and electronic communications with the ability to produce, lead, and deliver presentations to various stakeholders. 9. Ability to use technology to communicate, to manage data, and to produce/submit required reports, correspondence, and/or financial information. 10. Ability to collaborate and communicate with administrators, teachers, parents, and other school system staff to implement of IEPs for designated students. 11. Ability to be punctual and in regular attendance. 12. Physical and emotional ability and dexterity to perform required work and move about as needed in a fast-paced, high-intensive work environment.

Evaluation: Performance of this job will be evaluated in accordance with the provisions of the Board's policy on evaluation of personnel.
