Role Overview At Houston Methodist, the Supervisor Research Laboratory position – Matei Lab, provides administrative support and management of a laboratory within the Methodist Hospital Research Institute. The role ensures proper budgetary and operational needs, safety compliance, regulatory compliance, and establishes scheduling and resource usage. Responsibilities Oversee daily work activities of laboratory staff, ensuring quality, productivity, functional excellence, and efficiency. Train and supervise staff while maintaining adequate staffing levels and budget compliance. Contribute to staffing decisions such as hiring, coaching, and counseling employees on work‑related performance. Assist in developing and implementing policies and procedures to ensure a safe and effective work environment. Participate in performance improvement activities and provide support for department management to achieve operational goals. Perform staff duties and responsibilities as needed. Participate in management responsibilities of selection, scheduling, supervision, retention, and evaluation of employees. Provide development and mentoring of staff and ensure training and policy compliance. Generate reports on needs, issues, and key information for department success. Organize workflow, proactively problem‑solve, and manage multiple priorities. Deliver laboratory administration services including purchasing, documentation, and support for PI’s. Maintain laboratory environment and coordinate with building services and facility managers. Oversee and manage laboratory waste streams. Ensure a safe work environment and monitor safety plans and guidelines. Optimize operations through information systems and participate in performance improvement. Identify and implement solutions via collaboration and role modeling situational awareness. Monitor employee compliance with policies and procedures; address non‑compliance. Maintain laboratory safety manuals and study methods. Assist with financial management to achieve targets and optimize productivity. Implement change management and support organization goals and vision. Identify industry trends and implement innovative workflow solutions. Develop team members’ skills and contribute to a positive teaching environment. Qualifications Education: Bachelor’s degree in a natural science or business. Experience: Four years in laboratory‑based operations, including three years in administrative processes such as purchasing, scheduling, and safety management, with at least one year of progressive responsibility. Internal candidates: three years in laboratory operations with the same requirements. Skills and Abilities Demonstrated competencies and safe job performance. Proficiency in speaking, reading, and writing English necessary for essential functions. Effective communication with patients, physicians, and staff using a customer‑service focus and positive language. Ability to inspire confidence in others. Leadership qualities, critical thinking, and interpersonal skills. Problem‑solving and solution recommendation. Ability to work effectively in a fast‑paced environment. Flexibility and adaptability. Willingness to learn computer‑based core management systems (iLabs, LAMBS). Supplemental Requirements Work Attire: Uniform, scrubs, business professional.
