Title: Medical Malpractice Defense Attorney (associate)

Location: Salt Lake City, UT

Salary: $150k-$180k/yr

Position Overview:                              
We are seeking a skilled and results-driven Medical Malpractice Defense Attorney to join our defense team. The attorney will represent healthcare providers, hospitals, and physicians in medical negligence litigation, manage cases from intake through trial, and work closely with claims adjusters, medical experts, and client representatives to develop defense strategies that minimize liability and achieve favorable outcomes.

Key Responsibilities
  • Manage a high-volume caseload of medical malpractice matters from initial evaluation through resolution, including litigation, settlement negotiations, and trial preparation
  • Conduct legal research, draft pleadings, motions, and briefs, and respond to discovery requests in accordance with court rules and deadlines
  • Prepare witnesses, including physicians and other healthcare professionals, for depositions and trial testimony; take and defend depositions as needed
  • Coordinate with medical experts to review records, obtain expert opinions, and develop defense strategies tailored to the clinical issues in each case
  • Work closely with clients (physicians, hospitals, clinics) and insurance carriers to communicate case status, strategy, and potential exposure
  • Handle all phases of pre-trial and trial practice, including case strategy, jury selection, opening/closing statements, evidentiary objections, and examination of witnesses
  • Manage discovery, including producing and reviewing medical records, supervising paralegals, and ensuring compliance with document production deadlines
  • Negotiate settlements and evaluate offers based on risk assessment, cost-benefit analysis, and client objectives
  • Maintain accurate case files, billing records, and timely communication with clients and colleagues
  • Participate in continuing legal education and stay current on developments in healthcare law, malpractice standards, and trial advocacy techniques

Qualifications

  • Juris Doctor (J.D.) from an accredited law school and membership in good standing with the state bar
  • 5+ years of litigation experience with substantial experience defending medical malpractice or healthcare-related matters; trial experience strongly preferred
  • Demonstrated courtroom experience, including jury trials and dispositive hearings
  • Strong knowledge of medical terminology, hospital and physician practices, and relevant healthcare regulations
  • Proven ability to prepare and defend depositions and to work effectively with medical experts
  • Excellent written and oral advocacy skills, including drafting pleadings and presenting complex medical issues to judges and juries
  • Effective client-management skills and the ability to work collaboratively with insurers, claims professionals, and clinical experts
  • Detail-oriented, organized, and able to manage competing deadlines and a heavy caseload
  • Willingness to travel to court, depositions, and client sites as required
  • Familiarity with electronic medical records, litigation support tools, and case management software is a plus
