Safety Coordinator – Eastern Region Location: Portland, Gresham, Oregon City. Job Summary In this role, you'll design, develop, implement and oversee the organization’s safety programs to safeguard employees, contractors and the public and to ensure compliance with laws, standards and regulations. The role supports line operations located in Portland, Gresham, and Oregon City, where you will rotate daily to lead safety meetings. This role requires on‑site presence with occasional remote work. You will participate in 24/7 safety duty phone coverage about once every five weeks. Key Job Information Senior Safety Specialist – Grade 7, Career Level: P3 Safety Specialist – Grade 6, Career Level: P2 Requires in‑depth knowledge and experience. Uses best practices and internal or external business issues to improve products or services. Solves complex problems; takes a new perspective using existing solutions. Works independently, receives minimal guidance. Acts as a resource for colleagues with less experience. Responsibilities Reporting and Analysis Conduct routine and complex investigations including incident reviews and root cause analysis. Develop and run reports; analyze trends and prepare presentations. Coordinate and lead follow‑up on action items related to reports and investigations. Lead process improvement projects, conduct benchmarking efforts and assist in identifying improvement opportunities. Program Management Develop and administer safety programs, guidelines, and initiatives to meet business objectives and comply with all state and federal laws. Integrate industry best practices into existing programs. Develop continuous improvement of an ongoing interactive safety program and partnership with contractors. Consultation / Education Serve as subject‑matter expert to managers and employees. Analyze business needs and develop innovative solutions to safety‑related problems. Design and deliver educational programs to managers, employees and community organizations on safety. Special Projects Lead special projects to meet corporate objectives engaging closely with other departments. Facilitate safety meetings and other safety processes. Assume leadership roles in emergency and incident response as required. Develop and increase communication with contractors to share best practices. Compliance Respond to regulator requests and prepare legally required filings and reports. Ensure programs, policies, and procedures comply with applicable laws and regulations. Analyze regulatory changes and recommend and implement appropriate actions. Education & Experience Bachelor’s degree in science, business, human resources or other related field or equivalent experience. Typically, five or more years in professional safety and/or electric generation, transmission and distribution operations; or, depending on position, drug and alcohol or ergonomic program management. We consider candidates with less experience (2–5 years) for less complex duties with more supervision. Certifications Journeyman card or equivalent trade or operator qualification preferred. Certified Safety Professional (CSP) Associate Safety Professional (ASP) Construction Safety & Health Technician (CHST) Occupational Health & Safety Technologist (OHST) Certified Utility Safety Professional (CUSP) Certified Occupational Safety Specialist (COSS) Other relevant certifications as preferred. Knowledge, Skills & Abilities Intermediate knowledge of employment laws and PGE’s policies, procedures, collective bargaining agreements and benefit plans. Intermediate knowledge of industry best practices related to area of discipline. Intermediate skills in project management and facilitation. Advanced writing, oral, written, customer focus, interpersonal, analytical, problem‑solving and change‑leadership skills. Advanced organizational and prioritization skills and decision‑making skills. Intermediate knowledge of business process interrelationships and advanced business acumen. Advanced safety leadership, risk management, and risk‑management skills. Physical & Cognitive Demands Adhere to set response times, deadlines and time‑sensitive tasks. Follow accuracy standards and decision‑making tasks. Interact effectively in a team environment and communicate under stress. Adapt to frequent change and demonstrate self‑awareness. Collaborate, exhibit sound memory and learn new information consistently. Remain compliant with safety and regulatory requirements. Schedule & Attendance Ability to work long hours, variable schedule and severe inclement weather. Consistently meet attendance standards for regular full‑time attendance. Physical Capabilities Valid driver’s license and safe driving history. Frequent driving/travel/commute within service territory; occasional overnight travel. Computer use during entire work shift. Lifting/pushing/pulling up to 10 lbs. Work on unstable surfaces, elevated areas, confined spaces, stairs over 10 steps, ladders over 10 rungs. Walking distances over rough or uneven surfaces. Compensation Actual total compensation, including a performance‑based incentive bonus, is commensurate with experience, skills, qualifications, education, training and internal equity.
