Probation Officer - Probate Court

Lenawee County

General Statement of Duties:
To serve the community through case management of adjudicated andnon-adjudicated youth that are under the jurisdiction of the Juvenile Court .

The objective of this position is to investigate, screen,and determine the placement and rehabilitation needs of youth and familiesduring the investigatory stage of their court involvement and makerecommendations for the disposition of delinquency matters. Conducts relevant assessments, and submitsreferrals to community agencies.

Completes required paperwork such as financial statements,consent release, and intake forms needed to advance court proceedings. Attends and partakes in court proceedings toprovide necessary recommendations.

Supervision Received : Work is performed under the generalsupervision of the Probate/Juvenile Court Director or designee.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities: An employee this class may be called uponto do any or all of the following: These examples do not include all of thetasks which an employee may be expected to perform.
• Juvenile Screening & Case Service Planning

o Conducts assessments to identify areas of needfor clients, such as minors, at-risk youth, juveniles, and their families orguardians.

o Meet in fact-to-face visits with youth and theirfamily regularly.

o Connect juveniles and families to identifiedresources through needs assessments.

o Familiarity with S.M.A.R.T. goals. Develop case plans.

o Adequate knowledge of trauma and thephysiological awareness of juvenile development.
• Determine Case Evaluation and Information forthe Court

o Conduct investigations into any environmentaldomain.

o Completes written reports of the juveniles' casehistory, and needs, identifies available resources, and the likelihood ofmaintaining in the community.

o Generates court documents to assist jurists incourtroom decision-making, including but not limited to; dispositional reports,review hearing reports, ex-parte requests, and probation violation motions.

o Perform drug screenings as deemed necessary.
• Case File Management

o Maintains detailed/accurate case notes in youthcenter while maintaining court files.

o Maintains documentation for state reporting,intensive home therapy, monthly caseload with contacts, and visits about childcare fund.
• Court Liaison

o Avail themselves to school, community members,parents, victims, and other youth serving organizations regarding juvenilecourt procedure and vision.

o Testify in court hearings.

o Attend community partnership meetings to staycurrent on local resources and services offered within the Lenawee area.

o Maintain positive and healthy workingrelationships with community partners.
• Communication

o Will speak and prepare reports that are clearand concise.

o Will be able to provide and accept informationfrom colleagues, community members, and experts in the field in a professionalmanner.
• Perform related work as required.

Desirable Education, Experience and/or Qualifications : An employee in this class, uponappointment should have the equivalent of the following training, qualificationsand/or experience.
• Bachelor's Degree in Criminal Justice, SocialWork or Psychology.
• Michigan Supreme Court Administrative Order1985-5 requires a Juvenile [Court] Probation Officer/Caseworker to complete theMichigan Judicial Institute (MJI) Certification training within two (2) yearsof employment.
• Experience in case evaluation and individualizedcase service planning.
• Qualifications and/or trainings inde-escalation.
• Must have a valid Michigan driver's license.
• Computer skills are necessary to effectivelyutilize word processing, spreadsheet and accounting software systems and theability to be trained on a specific software program.
• Attend pertinent training and conferences.
• Knowledge of juvenile law.
• Knowledge of court procedures and restorativejustice practices.
• Skill in managing a caseload.
• Ability to communicate effectively orally and inwriting.
• Ability to testify in court.
• Ability to work effectively with the public andwith other employees.

Working Conditions and Physical Abilities:
• Work is primarily indoors and requires sittingfor extended periods.
• Must be able to lift and carry up to 30 pounds.
• Must be able to hear and speak over the phoneand in one-on-one communication needs.
• Must be able to see and notice the needs of others.
• Must be able to enter into client's homes, assuch, the employee may encounter challenging clients, unique fragrances, scentsand home environments.
• Must be able to work unique working hours,before and after the traditional work day at times.
• Must be able to work in inclement weather.
• Must be able to travel in the communitythroughout Lenawee County and possibly beyond with their personal vehicle.
• Must be able to deal with hostile and volatileyouth and adults.
