The normal starting pay for this position is the minimum of the pay range listed above. A higher rate of pay may be considered, dependent on the qualifications and experience of the selected applicant and/or the City’s step placement policy.
ELIGIBILITY LIST PREFERENCE ORDER
Full-time City employees will receive preference in the following order: major division first, then department, then all other full-time City employees. Part-time/year-round City employees will receive preference next. If there are no qualified full-time City employees or part-time/year-round City employees, external applicants will then be considered (when the vacancy is open to external applicants).

POSITION DESIGNATION
This job classification has been designated as a safety sensitive job classification in accordance with the Oklahoma Medical Marijuana and Patient Protection Act, 63 O.S., § 427.1 et seq., (OSCN 2019), effective August 29, 2019. This means employees in this job classification can be subject to disciplinary action up to and including termination if they test positive for marijuana components or metabolites, even if they possess a medical marijuana license.
JOB SUMMARY
This posting will be used to fill a current vacancy in the Street and Drainage Maintenance Division of the Public Works Department within the City of Oklahoma City. An eligibility list will be established or supplemented for filling future vacancies per provisions of the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees (AFSCME) Collective Bargaining Agreement. This position is under the direction of an immediate supervisor. The primary purpose of this classification is to serve as a light truck and equipment operator and to perform general and semi-skilled tasks in support of construction, maintenance, emergency clean-up, and repair projects. The employee may work independently or as a member of a crew and is responsible for the safe operation, maintenance and condition of the equipment, tools and materials utilized. The employee must successfully complete a prescribed safety and emergency operations training program prior to assuming the full duties and responsibilities of the position. Essential job functions include : operating equipment requiring demonstrated skill and training, such as, dump trucks, flatbeds trucks with dump beds, truck-mounted cranes or wenches, loaders, skid-steer tractors with bucket loader, forklifts, etc.; performing general and specialized job site preparation and cleanup tasks associated with routine construction, maintenance, and emergency clean-up and repair activities; operating a variety of power tools and equipment, such as, chain saws, blowers, generators, portable lights, etc.; and preparing and collecting materials, tools and equipment for transport to and from work sites. Employees in this classification must have knowledge of and follow safety regulations and procedures at all times. The work may involve contact with the public, other agencies, and City departments to answer questions concerning the crew’s activity or function, with a supervisor present to respond to unusual questions. The employee typically works under close supervision when performing emergency operations but may complete more routine tasks independently upon receiving verbal or written instructions from an immediate supervisor.
VETERANS PREFERENCE
Honorably discharged veterans of the United States Active Duty Armed Forces, National Guard, and Reserve Forces who are not currently employed full-time by the City of Oklahoma City and who meet the qualifications for the position shall be given preference. To receive preference, veterans must submit verification of honorable discharge from the United States military service (Department of Defense Form DD214 or NGB Form 22) prior to the closing date of the vacancy announcement.
JOB REQUIREMENTS
- Knowledge of standard single axle trucks and light construction equipment operations and functions.
- Knowledge of and willingness to follow established safety procedures, practices, and regulations.
- Knowledge of standard construction materials, tools, equipment and work procedures of the assigned work unit.
- Skill in driving trucks with specialized attachments, such as, snowplows, bucket hoists, winches, snow brooms, salt and sand spreaders and equipment trailers, etc.
- Skill and ability to operate basic and heavy power tools and equipment.
- Ability to work independently and/or cooperatively with others.
- Ability to work under close and/or minimal supervision.
- Ability to set-up or maintain a safe work site.
- Ability to follow verbal and written instructions.
- Ability to make common-sense decisions.
- Possession of a valid Class B Commercial Driver License (CDL).

Note : Typical City employee working hours are 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., Monday through Friday. However, working hours vary (may require work to begin before 8:00 a.m. and/or end beyond 5:00 p.m., and/or may require work on weekends and holidays), and are subject to change, based on the duties and location of the position and the business needs of the assigned work unit/department.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
- Strength enough to lift, push, pull or carry objects weighing up to 70 lbs. alone, or 180 lbs. with mechanical assistance.
- Stamina enough to exert one’s self physically throughout the workday.
- Flexibility and gross body coordination enough to bend, twist, or reach when performing work-related activities.
- Manual dexterity and arm-hand steadiness enough to use hand tools, operate light construction equipment, etc.
- Near and far vision enough to operate equipment, observe traffic, etc.
- Hearing enough to understand conversation in a noisy environment, determine the location of traffic, etc.
- Speech and hearing enough to communicate via two-way radio and in person with crews, other department personnel, and citizens.

Eligibility List: An eligibility list will be established from this posting consisting of applicants who receive a score of 70 percent or better. Multiple selection procedures may be utilized; a minimum of 70 percent or better will be required on each; and the results of multiple selection procedures will be equally weighted. The eligibility list will be in effect for 90 days from the date of the final selection procedure and will be used to fill future vacancies.
Pay Method: City employees are required to receive pay electronically, either via direct deposit or pay card.
