The Crew Chief leads and supervises a field survey crew on a variety of projects, ensuring that all survey activities are completed accurately, efficiently, and in accordance with project requirements and company standards. This role performs boundary, topographic, ALTA/NSPS, as-built, and construction layout surveys while coordinating daily field operations and serving as a key point of contact for project stakeholders.

Responsibilities

• Lead and supervise a field survey crew on assigned projects, providing direction and support to ensure efficient and accurate work.

• Perform boundary, topographic, ALTA/NSPS, as-built, and construction layout surveys in accordance with applicable standards and project specifications.

• Operate and maintain survey equipment, including GPS units, total stations, data collectors, and robotic instruments, ensuring proper calibration and functionality.

• Collect, verify, and document field data with a high level of accuracy and completeness for use in project deliverables.

• Coordinate daily activities, schedules, and site logistics for survey operations to meet project timelines and objectives.

• Ensure all survey work complies with project requirements, company standards, and industry best practices.

• Review field notes and survey data to confirm accuracy, consistency, and completeness before submission.

• Communicate regularly with Project Managers, clients, contractors, and other stakeholders to provide updates on project progress and address field-related issues.

• Maintain survey vehicles, equipment, and supplies in good working order, reporting and addressing any maintenance needs promptly.

• Enforce company safety procedures in the field and actively participate in jobsite safety meetings to promote a safe working environment.

Essential Skills

• Proven experience in land surveying, including boundary, topographic, ALTA/NSPS, as-built, and construction layout surveys.

• Strong proficiency in operating survey instruments such as GPS units, total stations, data collectors, and robotic instruments.

• Hands-on experience with topographic surveys and construction-related surveying activities.

• Ability to accurately collect, verify, and document field survey data and maintain detailed field notes.

• Knowledge of land surveying principles, practices, and standards applicable to civil and construction projects.

• Experience working with total stations and related equipment, including systems such as Leica.

• Strong organizational skills to coordinate daily field activities, schedules, and site logistics.

• Effective communication skills to interact with Project Managers, clients, contractors, and field crew members.

• Commitment to enforcing and following safety procedures on jobsites.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in civil engineering or a related civil discipline.

• Experience in construction environments and familiarity with construction layout requirements.

• Ability to troubleshoot and perform basic maintenance on survey equipment.

• Capability to manage multiple field tasks and adapt to changing project needs.

• Strong attention to detail and commitment to data accuracy.

• Ability to work independently while providing leadership and guidance to crew members.

Work Environment

This role is primarily performed on site in the field, supporting civil and construction-related survey projects. A work vehicle is provided for travel to and from job locations, and travel time to the job site is covered. The work vehicle may be dropped off at the office or taken home, depending on operational needs. The position is hourly, with eligibility for overtime pay. The environment involves regular use of survey equipment such as GPS units, total stations, data collectors, and robotic instruments, and requires adherence to safety procedures and participation in jobsite safety meetings.

This is a Permanent position based out of Jersey City, NJ.

Pay and Benefits

The pay range for this position is $80000.00 - $100000.00/yr.

Individual compensation offered for this position within this range will depend on many factors, including qualifications, skills, relevant experience, job knowledge, geographic location, internal equity, and other pertinent job-related factors.
