Registered Respiratory Therapist (RRT) | 36 Hours per Week | Respiratory Therapy

Job Overview Respiratory Therapist - assess patients with respiratory disorders, conduct diagnostic testing, develop treatment plans, and administer respiratory therapy. Operate medical devices, monitor patient responses, and provide emergency care. Work with healthcare teams to manage respiratory conditions, improving lung function and respiratory health. Responsibilities Conduct tests that support the evaluation of cardiopulmonary functions. Educate patients and families about conditions and teach disease‑management techniques, such as breathing exercises and respiratory equipment use. Determine treatment requirements—type, method, duration, precautions, medication dosage—compatible with physician orders. Enforce safety rules and ensure adherence to physicians’ orders. Explain treatment procedures to patients to gain cooperation and allay fears. Maintain charts containing patient identification and therapy information. Perform oxygen requirement testing with patients. Instruct and perform bronchopulmonary drainage, assist or instruct patients in breathing exercises. Provide emergency care, including artificial respiration, external cardiac massage, and cardiopulmonary resuscitation. Monitor physiological responses to therapy—vital signs, arterial blood gases, blood chemistry—and consult physicians if adverse reactions occur. Work as part of a team of physicians, nurses, and other health‑care professionals to manage patient care and assist with medical procedures. Demonstrate respiratory care procedures to trainees and other health‑care personnel. Inspect, clean, test, and maintain respiratory therapy equipment; order repairs when necessary. Perform pulmonary function tests and adjust equipment to obtain optimum results. Relay blood analysis results to a physician. Set up, operate, evaluate, and communicate with providers on devices such as mechanical ventilators, NIV apparatus, therapeutic gas administration apparatus, environmental control systems, and aerosol generators. Teach, train, supervise, and utilize the assistance of students, respiratory therapy technicians, and EKG technicians. Qualifications Associate’s Degree (AA) from a CoARC‑approved Respiratory Therapy program. Licensed by the State of Iowa as a Respiratory Care and Polysomnography Respiratory Care Practitioner. Credentialed by the National Board of Respiratory Care as a Registered Respiratory Therapist. 1‑2 years prior acute‑care experience. Knowledge of customer‑service principles and quality‑standard evaluation. Knowledge of diagnostic and treatment of human injuries, diseases, and deformities. Knowledge of curriculum design, teaching, and instruction for individuals and groups. Understanding of English language structure, composition, and grammar. Effective written and verbal communication with health‑care personnel. Ability to promote communication and relay information clearly. Understanding of ethical guidelines. Prompt administration of ordered treatments and medications per hospital policies. Responsive handling of clinical procedures and emergencies. Ability to perform respiratory assessment and differentiate normal from abnormal findings. Ability to analyze abnormal findings, initiate appropriate responses, and anticipate potential problems. Evaluation of patient response to therapy and recommendation of changes to physicians. Documentation of all aspects of the Respiratory Care process in a legible, concise, and timely manner using EMR or appropriate hospital forms. Sound judgment based on critical‑thinking and problem‑solving skills. Utilization of evidence‑based practices when applicable. Expertise in troubleshooting equipment per department and hospital policies. Professionalism, adherence to dress code, respect for others. Continuous learning and knowledge expansion within Respiratory Care. Certifications & Licensing State of Iowa license as a Respiratory Care Practitioner upon hire. Driver’s license required upon hire. Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) – American Heart Association required within 90 days. Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP) – American Academy of Pediatrics required within 90 days. Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) – American Heart Association required within 90 days. Child Abuse Iowa Mandatory Reporter – Iowa Department of Human Services required within 90 days. Dependent Adult Abuse Mandatory Reporter – Iowa Department of Human Services required within 90 days.
