Location & Employment 3520 W Oxford Avenue, Denver, CO 80236 Full‑time and part‑time positions, on‑site, shift work. About the Unit The Safety Department ensures the safety and security of the Colorado Mental Health Hospital at Fort Logan (CMHHIFL). Duties include maintaining a safe environment for patients, personnel, and visitors; assisting clinical staff; managing aggressive or assaultive individuals; and monitoring and enforcing applicable laws and regulations. Purpose of the Position Ensure a safe work environment through adherence to CMHHIFL/CDHS policies, Joint Commission Standards, Life Safety Codes, and Colorado statutes. Respond to crisis situations, assist nursing and clinical staff, conduct environmental safety checks, and facilitate on‑unit/campus transports. Job Duties Respond to staff requests for assistance. Perform supportive actions and approved physical intervention techniques, as necessary. Maintain safety and security by responding to psychiatric emergencies and non‑emergency situations. Exercise sound judgment and emotional control while evaluating risk. Use verbal defense, VDI, and CPI skills in a positive and respectful manner. Support patient transport when appropriate. Patrol, observe, and round to detect, prevent, and control security incidents. Document criminal activity reports and provide traffic surveillance and parking control. Conduct routine physical checks and monthly safety inspections of clinical units. Identify security violations and hazards; initiate corrective actions. Perform monthly fire drills and evaluate staff training. Transport/escort clients and staff to and from locations on and off hospital grounds. Enter security‑sensitive areas with or without staff assistance. Communicate with other police agencies as a liaison between Fort Logan and surrounding law‑enforcement agencies. Perform other duties as assigned. Minimum Qualifications High school diploma or General Education Diploma (GED). Preferred Qualifications College education in behavioral health, justice, or related field. Experience working with adjudicated or detained populations in a secure or behavioral health setting. Experience facilitating psycho‑educational groups; working with adolescents who have trauma. Experience using verbal de‑escalation and motivational techniques. Clear verbal communication and respectfulness. Ability to identify and act on changes, hazards, or potential security breaches. Strong written communication and event reporting. Work Schedule Shift work with varying shifts at a 24/7 facility. Conditions of Employment Background check required; felony or morale‑turpitude convictions may disqualify. Valid Colorado driver’s license (unrestricted) or eligible U.S. license within 30 miles of the border. Ability to drive a state‑owned vehicle when required. Must be a Colorado resident at application time and throughout employment. Minimum age 21 years. Ability to travel to assigned trainings/sites and provide local transport for patient care. Required to report immediately for essential or emergency services. Must pass a Tuberculosis (TB) test and complete all modules of the CMHHIFL New Employee Orientation core curriculum. Must not engage in any sexual, social, personal, or financial relationships with patients before, during, or after hospitalization and must disclose any such relationships.
