Real Flexibility. Manageable Hours. Texas Tenant Law is a growing litigation firm with offices in Austin and Houston, serving clients throughout Texas. We are seeking a Texas-licensed litigation attorney who wants meaningful courtroom work, ownership of their cases, and the flexibility to build a sustainable career without the punishing billable-hour requirements common at many firms. What sets this position apart: 1,000 collected-hour annual minimum - substantially below traditional large-firm billable expectations $91,000-$100,000 base salary, depending on experience, with additional compensation available for more senior candidates Collection-based performance bonuses, with total annual compensation for strong performers reaching approximately $150,000 or more Real schedule flexibility for attorneys who meet their obligations to clients, courts, and their cases Fully remote work - work from home anywhere in Texas, with in-person attendance required only for court appearances and other proceedings when necessary. Immediate courtroom and case responsibility Collaborative case strategy and support — you own your files, but you do not practice in a vacuum Meaningful, access-to-justice work with a direct impact on clients' lives The Role Our practice focuses on real estate litigation, with a significant concentration in landlord-tenant matters. We primarily represent tenants while also serving select residential and commercial landlord clients. Our cases range from relatively modest disputes to multimillion-dollar litigation, giving our attorneys exposure to an unusually broad variety of matters. Your docket may include habitability and property-condition claims, security deposit disputes, eviction defense, debt defense and consumer protection, contract disputes, foreclosures, post-judgment collection, real estate fraud and conversion, landlord trespass, and premises liability. Associates take ownership of their files and are expected to move cases forward independently, including appearing in court as appropriate. At the same time, we work collaboratively, regularly reviewing cases and strategy as a team so that attorneys have the benefit of their colleagues' experience when difficult issues arise. Associates also conduct prospective-client consultations and help evaluate which matters are right for the firm. A Practice With a Purpose Texas Tenant Law is, at its core, an access-to-justice firm. Our attorneys give them an effective advocate, enforce the protections available to them under Texas law, and have the opportunity to make a tangible difference in people's lives. Many Texans who need this advocacy are Spanish-speaking. Spanish fluency is highly valued but is not required. Who We're Looking For We are looking for a Texas attorney who is ready to take meaningful responsibility for an active litigation docket. Required: Active membership in the State Bar of Texas At least 2 years of practicing attorney experience Litigation and courtroom experience Ability to independently manage a caseload and court appearances Strong legal research, drafting, and verbal advocacy skills Working knowledge of the Texas Rules of Civil Procedure and Texas Rules of Evidence Professional reliability, responsiveness, accountability, and integrity Strongly preferred: First-chair trial experience or significant second-chair experience Experience with the Texas Property Code and/or real estate litigation Spanish-language fluency Attorneys with substantial litigation and courtroom experience who are ready to take the next step into greater first-chair responsibility are encouraged to apply. Excellent writing is particularly important to our practice, and a strong writing sample will be an important part of our evaluation. We are a technology-forward firm. Candidates should be comfortable learning and working with modern case-management, legal research, CRM, communication, and document-management platforms. Compensation, Hours & Flexibility Base compensation generally ranges from approximately $91,000 for attorneys with two to three years of experience to $100,000 for attorneys with three to five years of experience. We welcome more experienced candidates and are open to discussing higher compensation appropriate to experience and billing rate. Performance bonuses are tied to collected billings, and total annual compensation can reach approximately $150,000 or more for strong performers. Rather than imposing a traditional 1,800-2,000+ billable-hour requirement, this position has a minimum of 1,000 hours per year billed at the attorney's full rate and collected. We believe experienced attorneys should be trusted to manage their docket and, within reason, their schedule. Attorneys who remain responsive to clients, courts, and opposing counsel and meet their case and performance obligations have meaningful latitude over how and when they work. Location Austin-area attorneys may work on a hybrid basis. We will also consider highly qualified Texas-licensed attorneys outside Austin for remote work, provided they are able to make required court appearances.
