Duties The Outpatient Staff Registered Nurse (RN) provides comprehensive, evidence-based, and patient-centered nursing care to individuals and families in an ambulatory care setting. The RN demonstrates professional competence, leadership, and sound clinical judgment while delivering high-quality care to patients with a wide range of acute and chronic conditions. The nurse provides oversight and direction to licensed vocational nurses and nursing assistants, as appropriate to the clinic setting, and actively contributes to care coordination, health promotion, education, and quality improvement initiatives. Conditions of Employment U.S. Citizenship is required. Selective Service Registration is required for males born after 12/31/1959. Selectee may be subject to a probationary period. On‑call hours or standby duty may be required. Position is subject to rotating shifts; days, evenings, nights, weekends, and holidays. Shift rotations may vary from 8-, 10-, and 12‑hour shifts. Background Investigation Requirement Successful completion of a federal background investigation is a condition of employment. All required forms must be completed within five (5) calendar days of issuance. Qualifications To qualify, your resume must state sufficient experience and/or education to perform the duties of the specific position. Experience includes paid, unpaid, volunteer work, and other relevant work. Applicants must clearly identify duties, responsibilities, and total hours per week in each position held. Education and Licensure Applicants must possess a graduate or higher level degree, bachelor’s degree, associate degree, or diploma from an accredited professional nursing educational program. Official certification from the Commission on Graduates of Foreign Nursing Schools is required for foreign education graduates. Applicants must have passed the National Council Licensure Examination and possess a current, active, full, and unrestricted license or registration from a recognized state, District of Columbia, the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, or a U.S. territory. Experience Requirements Experience requirements vary by grade level. GS‑5: Bachelor’s degree in Nursing with no experience, or Diploma or associate degree in professional nursing and one full year of professional nursing experience. GS‑7: Bachelor’s degree in Nursing and eligibility under the Superior Academic Achievement provision; Bachelor’s degree in Nursing and at least one full year of professional nursing experience; Diploma or associate degree in professional nursing and two full years of professional nursing experience; or Completion of at least one full year of graduate education in a professional nursing program. GS‑9: Master’s degree in professional nursing; or At least one full year of professional nursing experience and possession of a diploma, associate degree, or bachelor’s degree in Nursing from a professional nursing program. Experience Refers To Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs such as Peace Corps or AmeriCorps and other organizations. Degree and License Waiting Period for Impending Graduates Documentation from the educational institution’s registrar, dean, or other appropriate official attesting to the applicable timeframe for completion of the professional program/coursework. A copy of the most recent unofficial transcript. Minimum Qualifications Specialized Experience GS‑07: Performing outpatient nursing duties including triage, patient assessment, implementing provider/clinic standing orders, administering medications, coordinating care, and counseling patients within established protocols. Specialized Experience GS‑09: Implementing standardized disease‑management and prevention guidelines; conducting comprehensive assessments; developing plans of care; monitoring patients; coordinating referrals; providing counseling and education; administering medications; recognizing adverse signs; initiating interventions; evaluating outcomes; providing guidance and mentoring to staff. Additional Requirements Applicants may be subject to Employee Health Policies related to measles and rubella and seasonal influenza immunizations. Applicants must maintain financial responsibility; any substantial delinquent financial obligations may render applicant unsuitable. Financial suitability review is part of personnel security and suitability determination. Applicants must complete all background investigation forms within five (5) calendar days of issuance. Recruitment or relocation incentives may be authorized; at least a six‑month service agreement will be required. The Indian Health Service offers student loan repayment programs for qualifying health disciplines via IHS, NHSC, and HRSA. The position may be covered by a bargaining unit.
