HEAT PLANT SPECIALIST 3 - LOVELOCK

The Department of Corrections is seeking to fill a Heat Plant Specialist 3 position located in Lovelock. This role will involve operating and performing preventive maintenance on the boiler system at the Lovelock Correctional Center. Responsibilities include: Operate, adjust, monitor, maintain, clean and repair high‑ and low‑pressure boilers and heat‑generating equipment, including valves, pumps, steam lines, and emergency power generators. Complete a recognized heat‑plant apprenticeship program followed by one year of journey‑level experience as a heat‑plant specialist, or an equivalent combination of education and experience, or one year of experience as a Heat Plant Specialist II in Nevada State service. Check system functions by monitoring and adjusting the computerized energy management system, combustion and safety controls, and temperature and pressure gauges to ensure safe and efficient operation. Perform preventive maintenance: lubricate motors and fans, replace drive belts, clean equipment and surrounding areas, and maintain safety and efficiency. Carry out seasonal overhauls and inspections: dismantle and clean boilers, repair or replace refractories, repack valves, repair pumps and seals, and calibrate controls according to agency policies and regulatory requirements. Install, retrofit, and fabricate new equipment and components using electrical, welding, and plumbing skills to update or replace worn parts. Maintain records of operating conditions, maintenance performed, and equipment malfunctions in accordance with agency policies and regulatory requirements. Prepare budget requests for maintenance and equipment replacement. Respond to emergencies such as utility or system failures as required. Perform related duties as assigned. Lead or supervise crew work, documenting inmate performance or skilled staff work, implementing security procedures and conducting performance evaluations. Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Working knowledge of: heat distribution equipment and emergency power generators. Ability to: prepare reports and keep accurate records; estimate material, maintain inventories, and make budget projections; determine annual inventory and maintenance needs relative to boiler operation. Skill in: using hand and power tools and test instruments to maintain, troubleshoot, and repair heat plant equipment.
