This role involves performing structural steel fitting and welding duties in a steel fabrication environment. You will work with a variety of welding processes, read and interpret blueprints, and ensure precise measurements while fabricating and fitting structural steel and pipe components.

Responsibilities

• Perform structural steel fitting for a variety of fabrication projects, ensuring components align and fit according to specifications.
• Complete flux core welding on structural and pipe assemblies, following established welding procedures and quality standards.
• Use a tape measure accurately to the 1/16th of an inch to lay out, mark, and verify dimensions on steel and pipe materials.
• Carry, position, and handle materials and components weighing up to 50 lbs safely throughout the workday.
• Perform tack welding to hold components in place prior to final welding and assembly.
• Carry out pipe fitting tasks, including cutting, fitting, and aligning pipe sections for welding and installation.
• Read and interpret blueprints and fabrication drawings to determine measurements, layouts, and welding requirements.
• Use MIG, TIG, and pulse MIG welding processes as required for different materials such as carbon steel, stainless steel, aluminum, and structural steel.
• Operate hand tools and grinding equipment to prepare, finish, and clean welds and fabricated components.
• Work efficiently in a production environment, meeting project deadlines while maintaining high quality and safety standards.
• Collaborate with team members in construction and mechanical fabrication activities to complete projects accurately and on time.

Essential Skills

• 1–2 years of experience in structural steel fitting and pipefitting in a fabrication or similar environment.
• Proficiency in structural steel fitting, including layout, alignment, and assembly of steel components.
• Hands-on experience with flux core welding for structural and pipe applications.
• Ability to read and use a tape measure accurately to the 1/16th of an inch.
• Capability to lift and safely handle up to 50 lbs on a regular basis.
• Experience with tack welding to secure components prior to final welds.
• Practical pipe fitting skills, including cutting, fitting, and alignment for welding.
• Blueprint reading skills to interpret fabrication drawings and welding symbols.
• Experience with MIG welding and TIG welding processes.
• Familiarity working with structural steel, stainless steel, carbon steel, aluminum, and sheet metal.
• Ability to use hand tools, grinders, and other common fabrication equipment safely and effectively.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

• Experience in a production or high-volume fabrication environment.
• Knowledge of pulse MIG welding techniques.
• Previous experience in construction or mechanical fabrication work.
• Understanding of AWS (American Welding Society) standards and welding best practices.
• Strong attention to detail and commitment to producing high-quality welds and fits.
• Ability to work both independently and as part of a team in a fast-paced setting.

Work Environment

This position is based in a steel fabrication facility working with structural steel, stainless steel, carbon steel, aluminum, and sheet metal. You will use welding equipment (including flux core, MIG, TIG, and pulse MIG), hand tools, grinders, and standard fabrication machinery in a production-oriented setting. The schedule typically runs Monday through Thursday from 6:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Friday from 5:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m., with some Saturdays from 5:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. as needed. The environment is industrial and hands-on, requiring appropriate work attire suitable for welding and fabrication, including protective gear and safety equipment.

Job Type & Location

This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Columbia, SC.

Pay and Benefits

The pay range for this position is $20.00 - $28.00/hr.
