Backend Engineering Manager

This position is listed on behalf of a partner company, who manages all applications and next steps. Our partner is looking for a Backend Engineering Manager based in the United States.

This is a senior engineering leadership opportunity focused on building and scaling critical backend capabilities for a cybersecurity platform protecting essential infrastructure. You will lead a team responsible for highly reliable microservices, distributed systems, data processing pipelines, and core platform components. The role combines deep technical expertise with people leadership, architectural direction, and strong cross-functional collaboration. You will work closely with engineering leaders, technical leads, product managers, and other stakeholders to shape and deliver platform capabilities. The position also provides opportunities to remain hands-on when complex development, troubleshooting, or production issues require additional technical leadership. You will help cultivate engineering excellence, mentor technical talent, and strengthen the backend engineering community. This is an impactful role for a leader motivated by solving complex systems challenges in a mission-driven cybersecurity environment.

Accountabilities

• Lead the backend engineering team and support the overall health, effectiveness, and development of the backend engineering skill community.
• Mentor engineers on technical growth, career development, system design, and engineering best practices.
• Own and champion the technical vision and execution strategy for backend platform components and services.
• Guide the development and evolution of microservice architectures, distributed systems, data processing pipelines, and extensible platform capabilities.
• Provide technical leadership and insight throughout software design, development, testing, deployment, and release processes.
• Collaborate closely with technical leads, product managers, engineering leaders, and cross-functional teams to align technical execution with product and business priorities.
• Help develop a strong technical community by fostering collaboration, knowledge sharing, and close relationships across engineering leadership.
• Support backend capabilities including streaming data ingestion, streaming detection processing, baseline learning, asset reconciliation, core platform APIs, and coordination across sensor and analytics deployments.
• Ensure reliable support for production deployments and help teams respond effectively to operational, troubleshooting, and technical challenges.
• Step in when needed to contribute to development, technical triage, debugging, or other hands-on engineering activities.
• Promote modern engineering practices, scalable architectures, and continuous improvement across the backend organization.

Requirements

• 7+ years of experience building and leading technical engineering teams, with a demonstrated ability to mentor and develop high-performing engineers.
• 5+ years of experience developing software applications or leading teams working with microservice architectures.
• Strong hands-on software engineering background with solid fundamentals in backend system design, distributed systems, scalable architectures, and production-grade software development.
• Strong preference for experience with Rust, combined with the ability and willingness to learn, adopt, and advocate for modern systems-level programming languages and architectures.
• Experience leading engineering teams within agile, cross-functional environments.
• Familiarity with technologies such as Apache Flink, RabbitMQ, and HashiCorp Vault is valuable.
• Ability to remain technically engaged and contribute to development, troubleshooting, incident response, or technical triage when required.
• Experience in cybersecurity, operational technology (OT), industrial control systems (ICS), or similarly complex technical environments is strongly preferred.
• Strong leadership, communication, mentoring, and stakeholder-management skills.
• Ability to balance strategic thinking with hands-on technical decision-making and execution.
• Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to navigate complex technical challenges while maintaining focus on reliability, scalability, and business impact.
