Senior Counsel, Product and Privacy

Job Description

VERSANT is looking for a thoughtful, practical, and curious attorney to join its corporate Privacy Legal team as Senior Counsel. This role will provide product, privacy, and data protection advice across VERSANT's global portfolio of businesses, products, and services.

This is a role for a lawyer who enjoys learning how things work, solving problems, and helping teams turn ideas into products and experiences. You will work across the enterprise with Product, Technology, Data, Advertising, Marketing, Security, and other business teams, while also partnering closely with legal colleagues and subject-matter experts.

Essential Responsibilities:

• Provide product counseling across the lifecycle. Partner with business, product, technology, engineering, data, and other teams from ideation through development, launch, and ongoing operation of products, services, features, and initiatives.
• Advise across a broad range of digital and consumer issues. Provide practical guidance on privacy and data protection, consumer protection, artificial intelligence, marketing, subscriptions, and other laws affecting digital products and services.
• Translate legal requirements into business decisions. Identify meaningful legal and regulatory risks related to product and privacy, explain their practical impact, and develop workable solutions.
• Support commercial matters as needed. Collaborate with other legal teams to review, draft, and negotiate data, privacy, and other terms impacting our digital products.
• Help the team scale. Develop practical guidance, playbooks, training, and processes that make legal support more consistent, efficient, and useful across a growing organization.
• Stay current and help shape our approach. Monitor relevant legal, regulatory, and technology developments and help the team adapt its guidance as products, business models, and laws evolve.

Qualifications

• J.D. from an accredited law school and active membership in good standing in at least one U.S. state bar.
• 7+ years of relevant legal experience, including meaningful experience counseling on product, technology, privacy, data, consumer, and related matters.
• Excellent judgment and communication skills, including the ability to provide clear, practical advice to stakeholders at all levels, take ownership of matters, and know when to collaborate or escalate.
• Strong attention to detail and the ability to manage multiple matters and shifting priorities.
• Willingness to dig into technology, products, business models, data flows, and subject matter that may be completely new to you.

Preferred Experience:

• Prior in-house experience counseling product, technology, data, and other digital teams.
• Experience with digital media, streaming, connected television, advertising technology, analytics, identity, personalization, AI, or other data-driven products and services.
• Experience reviewing and negotiating technology, privacy, data, or related commercial agreements and terms.

Additional Requirements:

• Hybrid:  This position has been designated as hybrid, generally contributing from the office a minimum of three days per week. Subject to change based on business need. This position is eligible for company sponsored benefits, including medical, dental and vision insurance, 401(k), paid leave, tuition reimbursement, and a variety of other discounts and perks.
• Salary range: $165,000-$190,000 (bonus & LTI eligible)
