Senior Maintenance Worker

Senior Maintenance Worker Responsible for the maintenance, repair, and minor construction of municipal landscaped areas, streets, sidewalks, storm drains, buildings, and related facilities. Performs semi-skilled and limited skilled work, operates power tools and medium to heavy‑duty equipment, and may provide guidance to lower‑level workers or take supervisory responsibilities in the absence of the assigned supervisor. Key Responsibilities General maintenance tasks including landscaping, irrigation, carpentry, plumbing, electrical, masonry, concrete, and painting. Operate a variety of tools and equipment appropriate to the assignment. Respond to emergency requests during and after working hours. Act as lead worker and assume supervisory responsibilities when necessary. Perform related work as assigned. When assigned to Streets & Storm Drains: Manual labor and maintenance of streets, sidewalks, curbs, gutters, traffic signs, and drainage facilities; concrete and asphalt installation; operation of Vactor truck, backhoe, paving machine, grader, street sweeper, and related equipment. When assigned to Traffic Signs & Markings: Strip streets, paint traffic lines, lay out and paint markings, and install and maintain traffic and street signs. When assigned to Graffiti Abatement: Remove or conceal graffiti using appropriate chemicals and equipment; paint over graffiti; conduct pressure washer cleaning; maintain inspection logs and records; coordinate volunteers for community service hours. When assigned to Street Sweeping: Operate street sweeper and associated equipment; clean streets, spill sites, and storm drains; replace damaged signs; maintain trash receptacles and bus stops. When assigned to Parks & Parkways: Groundskeeping, sprinkler system work, ball-field preparation, park building repairs, minor plumbing, tree and shrub maintenance. Education, Training and Experience High‑school graduation or equivalent. Two (2) years of experience performing manual labor tasks and operating tools and equipment in a similar environment; or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Licenses and Certifications Valid Class C California Driver's License (or higher) required; Class B or higher may be required for specific assignments. Revocation may result in disciplinary action. Hazardous Material First Responder certification and ISMA Work Zone Safety Certification desirable; may be required by end of probation for certain duties. Required Knowledge and Skill Levels Knowledge of standard tools, materials, and methods for maintenance and repair related to the assignment area. Knowledge of prevailing codes, hazards, and safety practices applicable to the work. Required Abilities Effective oral and written communication. Interpretation of verbal and written instructions, including technical specifications. Safe operation and maintenance of tools and equipment. Work organization and prioritization. Collaboration with co-workers, vendors, and the public. Must work varying shifts, including early morning, day, night, overtime, weekend, and holiday work. DISASTER SERVICE WORKER DUTIES All City of Costa Mesa employees are required to perform assigned disaster service worker duties in the event of an emergency or disaster, in accordance with Government Code Section 3100.
