Defense Software Chief Engineer

Responsibilities Lead a software team in the design, development, implementation, and testing of software solutions related to our Defense projects/programs, ensuring that they meet or exceed customer expectations. Directly responsible for architecture and design decisions for software solutions across Defense project teams, serving as the Technical Software Lead. Develop and implement processes, best practices, and technologies for delivering software solutions across the defense engineering teams and projects. Support business development efforts by providing technical expertise during proposal development and customer meetings. Participate in strategic planning activities to help define the company’s technical vision and roadmap. Lead the development and mentoring of technical staff, including identifying training needs, providing guidance and feedback, and conducting performance evaluations. Collaborate with project teams to identify the proper resources for implementing and supporting software solutions across all defense initiatives. Assist in procurement of resources by participating in the selection/hiring process. Develop and implement software engineering processes, standards, and best practices to ensure technical excellence across all projects. Lead the identification and development of skills and technologies needed for software delivery practices by team members. Serve as the software liaison with external partners and work with internal teams across the organization. Work effectively with remote teams and resources, which may include internal teams or external partners. Manage technical risks and ensure that appropriate mitigation strategies are in place. Ensure compliance with industry standards, government regulations, and company policies throughout the software development process. Work across engineering disciplines, ensuring smooth integration of individual components into larger systems. Collaborate closely with product managers, designers, and other engineers to understand requirements, provide technical recommendations, and ensure effective solutions. Translate business requirements into technical specifications, creating comprehensive solutions that encompass all technical aspects. Participate in and ensure the execution of code reviews, design reviews, and product requirement discussions, providing constructive feedback to improve overall product quality. Communicate technical capabilities and present solutions to management, external customers, and partners in an effective manner. Maintain a holistic view of projects and their solutions, ensuring alignment with broader organizational goals, defense industry roadmaps, and latest technologies and practices. Possess an entrepreneurial mindset, be comfortable with ambiguity, and be excited by new challenges. Education & Experience Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a related field. Advanced degree preferred. Fifteen or more years of industry experience in defense, automotive, or robotics. Desired Skills & Knowledge Technical leadership experience leading a software development team. Heavy experience in defense and a working knowledge of DoD project environments. Technical liaison experience working with outside partners. Responsibility as the Technical Design and Decision maker on a delivery team. Technical leadership on a defense project (preferred). Experience leading and working in environments using an Agile framework. Experience in an engineering prototype or research environment. Proficiency in multiple programming languages and platforms with diverse software architectures. Broad technical knowledge across various programming languages, platforms, and systems. Technical knowledge of simulation environments, networking architectures (TCP/IP, UDP, DDS, TSN), Windows and Linux OS, Security (NIST 800-171 CUI/CMSS, NIST 800-172 IL5, ITAR), development tools (Python, C/C++, Matlab, PowerShell, Bas., .Net), Web UI Technologies (HTML, CSS, JavaScript, Angular, Angular CLI, TypeScript, React, Java). Technical knowledge of infrastructure (networks, operating systems, security). Data persistence platforms (SQL Server, PostgreSQL, MongoDB, Redis, MySQL, SQLite, OwnCloud, InfluxDB, Cassandra/ScyllaDB). Messaging patterns and platforms (MQTT, RabbitMQ, Protobuf/gRPC, RESTful APIs, WebSocket/Socket IO, DDS, Kafka). Simulation and modeling (Virtual world Unreal Engine, CarSim, Adams RT, Simulink/Matlab, FMI/FMU, Modelica). IoT, ROS, embedded development. Raspberry Pi, Arduino, ROS/ROS 2, CAN bus. Mobile development (.NET MAUI, Native Android, Native iOS). Virtualization and containerization (Docker, Kubernetes, HyperVisor). Project management/solution delivery (Jira / Atlassian tools, GitLab, Microsoft Project). DevOps/DevSecOps (Git, SourceTree, GitKraken, GitLab, BitBucket, Jenkins, Azure DevOps, Ansible, Nexus, PME NuGet, tools repository). Observability and security tools (Prometheus, OpenTelemetry, Kibana, Splunk, Jaeger, Jest, SAST, DAST, fuzz testing, SBOM). Application security practices, tokenized OAuth security with SSO across PME applications, encryption of sensitive data, TLS security communication for services. Azure services (IoT Hub, Cosmos DB, Functions, Computing Resources, Storage) and AWS services (API Gateways, Lambda functions, Route 53 DNS, EC2 compute). Must meet the requirements for obtaining US Government clearance. Physical Demands Position requires occasional or frequent moderate physical activity. Work Hours & Travel Daytime schedule Monday‑Friday with flexibility to work longer hours and weekends during peak project deliverable durations or offsite testing trips. Monthly travel may be required and will vary based on project requirements. Pay Range $136,500.00 - $241,500.00 The above pay range reflects the minimum and maximum target pay for the position across all U.S. locations. Within this range, individual pay is determined by various factors, including the scope and responsibilities of the role, the candidate’s experience, education and skills, as well as the equity of pay among team members in similar positions.
