Our Organization and Mission: The Office represents the State of Florida in state and federal civil and criminal courts, from trial courts to the Supreme Court of the United States.
This Bureau Chief Assistant Attorney General position is in the Tallahassee Consumer Protection Bureau and manages the bureau in coordination with other staff supervisors, under the direction of the Division Director.

Attorneys in the Consumer Protection Division enforce Chapter 501, Part II, the Florida Deceptive and Unfair Trade Practices Act, as well as many related state and federal consumer protection-related statutes and rules in state and federal trial and appellate courts.
The Bureau Chief has their own case load and directly supervises the attorneys and paralegals, as well as overseeing the investigative and support staff.
Pay: $135,022.68 Annually
Qualifications: Admission to The Florida Bar and ten (10) years of professional experience in the practice of law, including three (3) or more years of civil litigation practice.
Preference will be given to attorneys with:
- 5 or more years of experience in the prosecution or defense of cases involving F.S. 501.
- 5 or more years of experience with civil litigation.
- 5 or more years of supervisory or management experience.

Your Role in the Consumer Protection Division :
- Oversee Tallahassee office management: The Bureau Chief, in coordination with other staff supervisors, and under the direction of the Director, enforces agency and division policies and procedures; and supervises personnel, involving hiring, disciplining, employee relations, making recommendations for retention and classification and pay changes, attendance and leave approvals, performance reviews, and workload distribution.
- Lead a Dedicated Team of Investigators and Staff: Attorneys in this division hone and develop their case management skills by participating in and overseeing investigations of alleged consumer protection violations by individuals and businesses. In this role, the attorneys work with a team to assist with and often oversee and direct the collection of relevant evidence; legal research; preparation of investigative subpoenas; and review of consumer complaints, investigative or other summary reports, voluminous subpoena production responses, and other case information to evaluate and effectively direct case strategy and manage case resolution or litigation. Attorneys may also assist others in the performance of routine administrative functions including responding to correspondence and telephonic inquiries, e-filing, attending staff meetings, maintaining time records, and preparing case status reports.
- Assist with Management and Provide Guidance: The Bureau Chief provides guidanced for the Senior Protection Team, and any special initiatives in the North Florida region or other initiatives at the request of the Director.
- Case Development: The Bureau Chief helps to develop cases and recommend new case initiatives.
- High-Stakes Negotiations: Attorneys in this division require the ability to independently draft, manage, and negotiate the resolution of civil investigations and litigations, often in complex matters, requiring creative and innovative solutions involving injunctive and monetary provisions against individuals and corporate respondent(s). The Attorney’s role includes recommending appropriate terms to achieve meaningful relief and drafting resolution documents such as assurances of voluntary compliance, consent judgments, and mediated resolutions.
- Impactful Litigation: Attorneys in this division are also required to be able to initiate and manage civil litigation matters, in state and federal courts from initial filing through trial and any related appeal. Such litigation may involve emerging issues, matters of first impression, and matters that garner significant statewide or nationwide attention. In this role, the attorneys must be able to conduct appropriate legal research; recommend sound legal strategy; and independently draft memoranda of law and related briefs, initial pleadings, subpoenas, motions, and all discovery. Attorneys are likewise required to independently conduct all related depositions, hearings, mediations, and trials as well as assist attorney, investigative and administrative colleagues in trial, pleading, practice, and procedures as needed.
- Partner with Local, State, and Federal Agencies: Attorneys in this division represent the Department in meetings and conferences relating to consumer protection investigations and litigation and are expected to establish and/or maintain lines of communication with local, state and federal civil and criminal partners; process related referrals; serve on federal or state task forces; and collaborate with such groups or agencies as appropriate.
- Become a Subject Matter Expert: Attorneys in this position are required to maintain current expertise in consumer protection law, including familiarity with recent judicial decisions and applicable state or federal rules and orders, and may be asked to review, draft, edit, or provide feedback regarding current, pending, or anticipated legislative changes.
- Legislation: The Bureau Chief may assist in preparing legistation proposed by the Department.
- Attorneys in this position are expected to perform all assigned tasks or responsibilities in a timely manner, which may require extended hours and/or travel outside the worksite. Advanced computer use is required for the drafting and preparation of pleadings, briefs, hearing or trial notebooks, and other necessary documents.
