Caltrans Environmental Scientists perform a broad range of work concerning environmental issues related to protecting California's resources as related to transportation projects. Incumbents do field analyses; prepare environmental documents and technical studies, environmental permitting packages and regulatory permits; ensure compliance with various environmental laws and regulations; and conduct environmental protection, planning, and mitigation activities. Incumbents apply scientific methods and principles to analyze and evaluate available data on the effects of transportation projects on all aspects of the environment; prepare and review CEQA/NEPA and other technical documents to determine the effects; and implement mitigation strategies to lessen the impact of those projects.
Under the general supervision of the Environmental Branch Chief, the incumbent is an interdisciplinary team member who must establish and maintain a professional working relationship with internal project delivery partners, various regulatory agencies, local partners and interested parties involved with Caltrans' projects. The incumbent must be solution oriented and will need to investigate innovative solutions to meet deliverables. This work requires strong oral and written skills with the specific ability to prepare technical reports as well as written and verbal correspondence. This position may require site visits, sometimes to remote areas, which may require driving a personal or state vehicle on public roadways or on uneven terrain.PARF# 11-27-0062 / JC-528475 Eligibility for hire may be determined by your score on the ENVIRONMENTAL SCIENTIST exam. Position located at 4050 Taylor St San Diego CA, San Diego County. Multiple positions may be filled from this recruitment. While at the base of operation, the incumbent will work in a climate-controlled office under artificial lighting in a office. Frequent travel and field work are required within the Region. Some fieldwork requires the ability to work in a variety of climatic and geographical conditions. The incumbent may be required to travel to offices and field locations, as well as occasional travel outside of the Region.

- Possession of a valid driver's license is required when operating a State owned or leased vehicle.
Provide examples of relevant experience and/or education that demonstrate your ability to and experience with:
- Federal, State, regional, and/or local environmental laws and policies; environmental compliance documentation; and environmental compliance coordination with local, state, and federal jurisdictions, agencies, and other partners.
- ArcGIS, ArcPro, or comparable geographic information system software and Microsoft applications (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, etc.).
- Organizing and executing work to objectives/milestones, while meeting quality standards.
- Communicating and coordinating with internal and external partners.
- Preparing written documents for public consumption.
- Successfully working in a team environment.

Education: Possession of a bachelor's or advanced degree with a major in a biological, chemical, physical, or environmental science, soil science, water science, hydrology, agronomy, natural resource science, environmental or public health, physical geography, or a closely related scientific discipline. (Admission to a masters or doctoral degree program in a biological, chemical, physical, or environmental science, soil science, water science, hydrology, agronomy, natural resource science, environmental or public health, physical geography, or a closely related scientific discipline shall be considered to meet these education qualifications.) In appraising the relative qualifications of candidates, consideration will be given to the extent and type of pertinent experience and education over and above that required under "Minimum Qualifications. Experience in management, research, planning, or consultation in environmental programs, demonstrated environmental management skills, and knowledge of broad principles of economics , social science, and political science will be given preference. Some positions within the Department of Health Services may require possession of a valid certificate of registration as an Environmental Health Specialist in the State of California pursuant to California Health and Safety Code Sections 514-534.
