Antitrust Litigation Associate (Mid-Level) | Washington, DC
A respected litigation boutique with a national reputation for trial work is adding a mid-level associate to its antitrust practice. The firm handles high-stakes competition disputes on both sides of the “v.”, bringing claims against dominant market players and defending companies facing monopolization, price-fixing and conspiracy allegations. Its clients range from health care organizations and financial institutions to technology and consumer businesses.
The Role
This is antitrust as litigation, not compliance or merger review. You’ll work on complex federal and state court cases where treble damages, injunctions and, at times, criminal exposure are on the table. Teams are lean, so associates don’t disappear into document review for years: you’ll draft the key briefs, take and defend depositions, work closely with economic experts and get real time with partners who have tried these cases. Because the practice represents plaintiffs and defendants, you’ll learn to build a case and to take one apart, which is a rarer skill set than most mid-levels get to develop.
Key Responsibilities
- Litigate Sherman Act and Clayton Act claims, including monopolization, exclusive dealing, tying, and price-fixing or market allocation conspiracies
- Draft dispositive motions, oppositions, class certification briefing and appellate papers
- Take and defend fact and expert depositions
- Work with economists on market definition, market power, and damages and overcharge analysis
- Manage discovery strategy, including large-scale document productions and privilege issues
- Prepare for trial: witness outlines, exhibit work, motions in limine and trial briefing
- Support matters that cross into government investigations, including DOJ and FTC inquiries and criminal antitrust exposure
- Advise clients on litigation risk and settlement strategy, including opt-out decisions in class actions
Your Future at the Firm
Boutiques of this kind promote on the strength of your work, not your headcount slot in a class. Associates who show judgment early get brought into strategy and client conversations, and stand-up opportunities in court follow. The firm’s broader litigation and white collar practices give you room to build a profile that spans civil antitrust and government enforcement, which is a valuable combination for anyone thinking about a long-term trial career.
Who You Are
You’re a litigator first who finds antitrust genuinely interesting, the economics included. You write cleanly under pressure, you’re comfortable owning a workstream without hand-holding, and you’d rather be in a deposition room than managing a review vendor.
Required Qualifications
- JD from an accredited law school with strong academic credentials
- 3 to 6 years of litigation experience at a law firm, ideally with meaningful antitrust exposure (assumed)
- Admission to the DC Bar, or eligibility to waive in promptly
- Excellent research and writing skills
Preferred Experience
- Federal clerkship
- Prior experience at the DOJ Antitrust Division, FTC or a state AG’s antitrust unit
- Deposition experience and exposure to expert-driven litigation
- Class action experience on either side
- Background in health care, financial services or technology markets
Compensation
$200,000 to $350,000 DOE.
