Under general supervision, performs general duty police work involving a wide range of duties performed to protect life and property, enforce laws and ordinances, and preserve order within the community. May be assigned to specialized duties at the discretion of management. Based on the duties and responsibilities outlined in this job description, this position is considered safety sensitive.

Essential job functions include inspecting the assigned patrol vehicle, operating the patrol vehicle, patrolling assigned areas, directing traffic, enforcing traffic laws, investigating road damage, removing hazards from the roadway, issuing citations, checking vehicle license plates and registration, investigating traffic accidents, enforcing City, local, state, and federal laws, testifying in legal proceedings, securing crime scenes, reviewing documents related to investigations, providing depositions or courtroom testimony, making arrests, advising persons under arrest of their rights, conducting stop and frisk searches, searching movable vehicles, searching persons, premises, or property incident to a lawful arrest, planning search methods, removing weapons from armed persons, advising victims of their rights, confiscating property for evidence, coordinating with school teachers and counselors, maintaining issued equipment, communicating over police radio, assisting in evacuations or rescues, advising domestic dispute parties, referring citizens to public and social services, establishing rapport and trust with citizens, maintaining field notes, obtaining information from witnesses and victims, attending in-service and specialized training, performing specialized duties, and performing other related duties as assigned. Material and equipment used include non-lethal weapons, two-way radio, computer restraint devices, and vehicle.

Minimum qualifications required include a high school diploma or GED, no prior experience or training required, a state certified police officer license, a valid state driver's license, and being 21-45 years of age according to state statute. Knowledge of local, state, and federal laws, judicial system, criminal prosecution, laws pertaining to citizen disputes and domestic violence, issuance of arrest or search warrants, legal limitations of police authority, recordkeeping, report preparation, first aid procedures, suspect/victim/witness interview and interrogation, departmental policies, public relations techniques, crime scene processing, crime prevention techniques, defensive tactics, arrest and suspect apprehension techniques, crime patterns, computer applications, and modern police administration procedures is required.
